IN PHARMA'S POCKET

“Hello Doc, I'm feeling down,
I've lost my job, you see.
I've bailiff's knocking on the door
and the landlord's after me.”

“Fear not Mr. Jones,
I've just the thing for you.
Take 2 of these twice a day,
they'll stop you feeling blue.”

“But these pills are quite dangerous,
won't they make me worse?
And aren't they addictive
and the side effects adverse?”

“Nonsense Mr. Jones,
these drugs are safe to take.
The pharma rep told me so
and paid the bill on my lunch break.”

“But aren't they hard to get off
and don't they make you ill?
Don't they harm your senses
and take away your will?”

“For goodness sake Mr. Jones
you don't know what you're saying.
These drugs are safe as houses,
read the label they're displaying.”

“But I've heard they cause addiction,
and suicidal ideation.
And head zaps when withdrawing
and also aggravation.”

Let's worry about tapering
when your illness clears.
They've been endorsed by professionals,
forgot those activist smears.”

[6 Months later]

“Jesus Doc, what's wrong with me,
my wife has left me too.
She said that I was intolerable,
please tell me what to do?

“I'll try you on another drug,
these one's are less severe.
Come back if you feel dizzy
and if your symptoms reappear.”

[2 years later]

A man of 48
died on Sunday night.
He jumped in front of a speeding train,
it was an ugly sight.

He'd been depressed for sometime,
He'd lost his job and wife.
His doc prescribed him SSRi's
And now he'd lost his life.

Pharma Giles, a literary genius!

Image: pharmagiles.blogspot.com/

I've long been an admirer of the work of Pharma Giles, even the name has me guffawing.

His latest offering is one of sheer genius. For those who don't know about the woman who put the cat in the bin story, give yourselves a refresher before you head on over to Pharma Giles blog. [Here's the cat incident that caused quite a stir not only in the UK but worldwide too]

Now... head on over to Pharma Giles and see his superb parody:

Here's the 'preamble':

A CRUEL pharmaceutical company who allegedly dumped sales representatives into a wheelie bin has been named and shamed today. Pfizer became one of the pharmaceutical industry’s most hated companies when allegations of dropping Pfizer sales representatives into green recycling bins emerged during an age discrimination court case.

Average Paxil Birth Defect Settlement $1.2 Million

Image: naturalcommunitiesmag.com

Lawyers and Settlements is reporting that the average settlement in the Paxil birth defect cases works out at approximately $1.2 million for each family involved, that's around £644,000 in English money.

By settling cases Glaxo and the claimants come to an agreement that nobody accepts liability. In other words, nobody is at fault for these children who were born with heart defects.

The $1.2 million should go a long way in helping these poor children get the medical treatment they so richly deserve. It does not, however, bring those responsible for this abomination to task.

Once again money is thrown at the problem and the culprit [do I have to add 'alleged' here?] walks free.

When are criminal charges going to be brought against pharmaceutical companies for withholding valuable data?

Are the FDA or MHRA going to do anything about this? Of course not - where's the proof? Locked and sealed as part of the settlement agreement. So, thankfully for the FDA and MHRA, no investigation is needed and they can go about their daily routine busting Joe Bloggs for selling a bunch of fake Viagra pills down at the local gymnasium.

Will the MHRA now have to admit that Paxil is a teratogen? Of course not, because GlaxoSmithKline, by ordering documents sealed as part of the settlement, don't have to inform them.

Doncha just love the way the drugs you and I take are regulated!

Later this year...or early next year, GlaxoSmithKline will be in the High Court in London, UK, defending a group action brought against them that claims that consumers had difficulty withdrawing from their product, Seroxat [known as Paxil in the US]

The claims are being pursued under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) 1987. The CPA provides for a non-fault based liability if the product is found to be defective and to have caused injury as a result.

Despite Glaxo taking a legal charge of £1.6 billion earlier this year to settle cases in the US regarding Seroxat, it would appear that they are not going to do the same with British consumers of their drug.

Let battle commence. I, for one, can't wait to see those items of disclosure.

SETTLEMENT APPROVED IN ZYPREXA (OLANZAPINE) CLASS ACTIONS IN CANADA

I missed this one:

Image: psychoedukation.de

MEDIA ADVISORY
For Immediate Release – June 30, 2010

SETTLEMENT APPROVED IN ZYPREXA (OLANZAPINE) CLASS ACTIONS IN CANADA

TORONTO, ONTARIO – A Settlement Agreement in the Canadian Zyprexa class actions has now been approved by the Canadian Courts. The class actions were brought on behalf of Canadian patients who used the antipsychotic Zyprexa (olanzapine) prior to June 6, 2007 in respect of allegations that the Defendants Eli Lilly Canada Inc. and Eli Lilly and Company sold Zyprexa without properly warning of alleged increased risks of developing diabetes and related disorders such as hyperglycemia, ketoacidosis, and pancreatitis. The Defendants deny these allegations and deny any wrongdoing or liability. The allegations made have not been proven in court, and the court has not taken any position as to the truth or merits of the claims or defences asserted by either side. Canadian patients who have been prescribed Zyprexa should consult with their physicians if they have any questions with respect to their medical condition and should not stop taking Zyprexa without consulting with their health care professional.

“We are very pleased with this result and look forward to moving ahead with the implementation of the compensation program” says Michael Eizenga, one of the Class Counsel responsible for negotiating the settlement. “We would like to commend the Defendants for putting this compensation program in place for Canadians.” Claude Desmeules, another of the Class Counsel, indicated that “formal notice of the settlement provides details, including deadlines, of how claimants are able to submit a claim.”

John Rudolph, Chief Legal Counsel, Eli Lilly Canada, stated: “While we believe the allegations are without merit, Lilly is taking this difficult step because we believe it is in the best interest of the company as well as the Canadian patients and the Canadian health care professionals who depend on this important medication.”

The Plaintiff classes in these actions are represented by a consortium of four Canadian firms:

● Siskinds LLP and Stevensons LLP
● Siskinds, Desmeules in Quebec in Ontario and all provinces and territories other than Quebec and British Columbia
● Poyner Baxter LLP

The Defendants in these actions are represented by Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. in British Columbia

GlaxoSmithKline's Vaccines - "Suffer The Children"

Paddy Doyle had a story to tell the world. He sat down and wrote a book entitled, 'The God Squad'. He didn't know that his book would become a bestseller in his native country, Ireland, nor did he ever envisage that he would win the Sunday Tribune Arts Award for literature.

His book centres around part of his life where he was detained in an industrial school for 11 years, where he was viciously assaulted and sexually abused by his religious custodians.

Today, Paddy has been active in raising awareness regarding vaccines that were used on other children during his stay in these religious hell holes.

One name keeps cropping up.

GlaxoSmithKline.

Glaxo Under Bribery Investigation in Finland

Image: ceoworld.biz

Nothing surprises me anymore about GlaxoSmithKline. It would appear that the World's second largest pharmaceutical company have found themselves [once again] under investigation from the authorities - this time in Finland.

According to Nelonen (Channel 4) news, the Chancellor of Justice is investigating if bribery was used in narcolepsy-suspect Pandemrix vaccine trade.

The Nelonen (Channel 4) news reports that the the investigation has begun because two individuals have reported their suspicions to the Chancellor. Investigation targets the Ministry of Health and THL, National Instute for Health and Welfare. THL has received more than six million euros last year from GlaxoSmithKline, which manufactures Pandemrix. THL has also had a key role in the decision to order Pandemrix to every Finnish inhabitant. [Source]

The investigation is also being reported on HELSINGIN SANOMAT, a popular Finnish journal.

HELSINGIN SANOMAT are also reporting that H1N1 vaccinations have been suspended over narcolepsy scare, at least 15 cases of narcolepsy among children and young people in past six months.

In separate, but related news, Sweden's Medical Products Agency have opened an inquiry into vaccinations for swine flu made by British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, suspected of provoking narcolepsy.

The reports concern children aged between 12-16 years who developed symptoms compatible with narcolepsy, a chronic sleeping disorder, that occurred one to two months after vaccination against the H1N1 pandemic.

Narcolepsy is a neurological sleep disorder. It is not caused by mental illness or psychological problems. It is most likely affected by a number of genetic abnormalities that affect specific biologic factors in the brain, combined with a set off from environment, such as a virus. [Source]

What is it with GlaxoSmithKline and children?

Hat Tip: "Rams"

Pharmaceutical Catholicism

Image: yapayapato.seesaa.net

The following headline caught my attention whilst skimming through the BBC News this morning. The Headline runs with '1972 Claudy bombings: Questions for Catholic Church'. The article, written by BBC Ireland Correspondent Mark Simpson, goes on to suggest that the findings of the investigation into the 1972 Claudy bombings are likely to be highly critical of both the Catholic Church and the police.

The report, writes Simpson, is expected to confirm that the authorities at the time were aware of the suspected involvement of a priest in the atrocity widely linked to the IRA, but failed to arrest him.

Instead, it is claimed that a secret deal was done to move Father James Chesney across the border into County Donegal.

Quite an accusation but given recent coverage over the child vaccinations in Ireland one cannot dismiss on a whim because of their faith.

I was raised a Catholic, my first experience of death was bearing witness to wooden carvings depicting a bearded man with nails through his hands and feet, a hole in his side leaking blood and a crown made of thorns where yet more blood spurted.

I was five.

Churches, 'they' claim, are places of worship, of comfort. From a very early age I found them fearful. Maybe that was the intention of the priests back then as they introduced the five year olds into the church. The church was next to the junior and infant school I had been enrolled at [for my sins]

The nativity plays were always welcoming, each of the children, myself included, playing out various roles, be they Mary, Joseph, one of the three wise men or stable onlookers. Hey, it was Christmas, what better way to celebrate than a nice little story about a woman giving birth in a stable. Christmas is a time for giving, we were told, hence the three wise men bearing gifts for the new born child who incidentally came into this world via the proverbial baby carrying stork, yup, that's right, there was no need for Mary and Joseph to copulate...it just happened.

How innocent we were as children, we did not question, we just rolled with it... for fear of retribution by God.

Great way to bring children into the world huh?

Forgive me for reminiscing, my early years were clouded by this indoctrination so it's therapeutic to go back in time once in a while, even if it means re-living the Catholic fairy tale of Father, Son and Holy Ghost ['Holy Ghost' was later changed to Holy Spirit]

"Now children, today you will be asking for forgiveness. You will each enter the small box and speak to the grill in front of you. You must tell the person at the other side of the grill about all the sins you have committed"

Wait a minute, I'm confused?

Back home TV ads were telling us not to talk to strangers, yet here at school, we were being encouraged to talk to someone we couldn't see, a priest behind a veiled grid wanted to listen to our sins then tell us what we should do to redeem ourselves.

I''ll be honest here, I used to make stuff up just so I could join the rest of the children kneeling at the Altar praying for forgiveness to a God that was really Jesus and also a ghost.

As the years wore on, entering the Tardis [confessional box] became more uncomfortable.

"Um... Bless me Father for I have sinned, it has been three weeks since my last confession, [lie, it was more like three months] I stole from a shop, I found ten pence in the street and never handed it in, I was watching the Wimbledon Tennis Final and my loins stirred at the American tennis player, Chrissie Evert" [the last one is actually true]

For my 'sins' I was told to say 5,10, 15 Hail Mary's. Just imagine if my sexual desires would have been toward Jimmy Connors! I probably would have joined the wooden carvings of the bearded man nailed to a cross that adorned the church walls.

All of the above, plus later years at my Catholic senior school where misbehaviour was met with a bamboo stick or the back of a training shoe on the knuckles, are treasured memories. So treasured that I refused to send my children to Catholic schools. Who would want to send their own kids to a place where farting is punishable by six strokes of the cane from whence the gaseous noise came from? Oh yes, nothing like corporal punishment for an act of Mother Nature now is there.

So, back to the 1972 Claudy bombings and the alleged involvement of a priest. Am I surprised?
Not in the slightest. Tell a man he is God's voice and they will pretty much do what they want to do without fear of retribution. Images of Joseph Biederman spring to mind here and 'that' deposition:

"Professor, what rank are you?"

BIEDERMAN: Full Professor

"What's after that?"

BIEDERMAN: God

"Did you say God?"

BIEDERMAN: Yeah

The Catholic Church are obscenely rich, yes, they give a lot away to various needy charities.

Pharmaceutical companies are obscenely rich, they also lay claim to supporting worthy causes.

This does not give either of them the right to take away free will, after all, wasn't it God who gave us all free will?

The Catholic church involvement in the three vaccination trials in Ireland [back story] is abhorrent. There involvement in a series of dangerous medical experiments on children from the Incarnation Children's Centre in New York is also abhorrent.

They have never once spoken out against GlaxoSmithKline's suppression of clinical trial data in paediatrics, nor against any other pharmaceutical company for that matter.

For a religion that condemns the use of contraception, they have never once uttered any words of dismay at GlaxoSmithKline for the suppression of information with regard to Paxil causing babies to be born with serious heart defects.

A modern day nativity play should see Mary giving birth to a child. The three wise men should take baby Jesus away to an incubator, something isn't right, the child is blue coloured and has respiratory problems. Mary shouldn't have taken those damn antidepressant tablets.

Baby Jesus struggles through his life, he travels far and wide to find treatment that is paid for with gold, frankincense and Myrrh, he does this with his father, Joseph, his mother was carted off to the asylum some time ago for being under the delusion that she has never had sex in her life. Joseph was reprieved, hey, he's a full professor after all.

**Disclaimer

I was raised as a Catholic, I had no choice in the matter. When I was old [wise] enough to see sense I disassociated myself from the Catholic Church.

I follow no official or unofficial faith - I have nothing against those that do.

My 'God' is the night sky and the twinkling stars [I'm not into Cosmic Ordering either!]

I often look up to the stars and ask why there is so much unjust in the world and the more I research GlaxoSmithKline and 'friends', the more I come to an understanding that there cannot be a God... if there is, and I am allowed into his Kingdom after my death, then he better be prepared for a tongue lashing!

Pressure mounts for GSK [inquiry into trials of vaccines]

Once again the Irish Independent is keeping tabs on the latest revelation that GlaxoSmithKline are facing legal action regarding their controversial vaccine trials carried out in the 1960's and 1970's on children.

The Adoption Rights Alliance have now joined the growing number of survivors and politicians calling for a new probe into the trials, which were conducted on behalf of Glaxo.

To make matters worse, an apparent investigation into these trials was carried out in 1993 by the Department of Health. Brendan Howlin, the then health minister, had said that he was "satisfied" that there was no added risk to the children who were involved.

This is where things start to take on a 'Constant Gardener' approach.

The results of this investigation have never been published and now the department cannot find the documents in its archives.

How convenient.

To put this into some sort of perspective, approximately 211 children took part in three separate vaccine trials in the 1960's and 1970's.

Trial definition:

'Refers usually to the trying out of a substance or a material in order to determine its effect.'

As I understand it, these 211 children did not have to sign any consent form to such trials, in pretty much the same way that a rat and its pups do not have a voice when poked, prodded and injected in a laboratory.

So, were these Irish children merely lab rats?

I understand the need for human subjects in medicine trials, without humans the medicines/vaccines would never get past the regulator's and would not be granted a licence. It would, however, be courteous of a major pharmaceutical company such as GlaxoSmithKline to, at the very least, conduct such trials with written consent from their subjects or the subjects parents.

The three vaccine trials in question

Paddy Doyle, who runs the 'God Squad' website, pointed me to a letter sent to him by the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (C.I.C.A) [Vaccine Trials Inquiry]

The first of these trials took place in 1960/1961 in 4 Mother-and Baby Homes, 1 Baby Home, and 1 Industrial School in the State. The purpose of the trial, in general terms, was to measure the effectiveness of a four-in-one vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and polio. The general practice at the time was to give a tree in one vaccine against the first three diseases, and to give the polio vaccine separately.

The second of the known vaccine trials took place between 1968 and 1970. It was carried out in and Industrial School in Dublin, and also involved children in the Midlands who were living at home. In general terms, the purpose of this trial was to assess the effectiveness of a rubella vaccine when administered nasally rather than by injection.

The third vaccine trial into which the Division has been statutorily mandated to inquire into took place in 1973. The subjects of this trial were children living at home in Dublin, as well as children residing in 5 institutions. In general terms, the purpose of this trial was to compare the reactions of children who were given commercially-available batches of 3 in 1 vaccines to the reactions of children who were given a modified vaccine of equivalent efficacy but of a lesser potency.

Doyle writes:

This letter sent to me and to many other people who were institutionalised during their childhood is far from satisfactory. The language contained in it is vague and there seems to be a willingness to accept that vaccine trials only took place in five institutions in the state.

He adds:

I did telephone “the Division” and sought clarification of some aspects of their investigation. It is my view that the following questions need to be answered:

How would a young child between the age of say, four and ten years know what was being injected into them or what it was they were being asked to swallow.

Does “the Division” really believe the Multi National Drug companies will really come forward with their “hands up” and admit to having conducted drug trials. It is well known that large drug companies never volunteer such information. It is my view that “the Division” is naĂ¯ve in believing that such information will be easily forthcoming.

Can we really expect that religious orders and others in whose care children were placed are going to admit that they did allow drug trials to be carried out in their institutions – I very much doubt it.

Most people are now familiar with the cover-up regarding sexual, psychological and emotional abuse, which was an every day occurrence in institutions all over Ireland. Can we realistically expect that admissions of other abuses will be admitted to? I think not!

“The Division” did offer to send me a copy of a report entitled:

Report on 3 Clinical Trials involving babies and children in institutional settings 1960/’61, 1970 and 1973 (This report is stamped with the official stamp of the Commission to Inquire into Child abuse and is dated 04 June 2002) I have transcribed the report as part of this important debate.

Many other questions need to be asked and regarding the vaccination of children in “care” Questions such as: How many children were exposed to drug trials or even experimental surgery once they had been admitted to hospital. While these questions are not within the remit of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, perhaps they should be included in the Commissions Terms of Reference.

It appears to many people who were institutionalised and abused that little or nothing is happening to speed up the Inquiry or Compensation process through the Residential Institutions Redress Board R.I.R.B.

The patience of any individual is not something that is infinite. Questions need to be asked and answers must be given.

I have to echo Paddy Doyle's sentiments here, he raises some very valid and pertinent questions, all of which need answering.

Paddy Doyle's 'God Squad' website is a treasure trove of information regarding the vaccine trials carried out back in the 60's and 70's and anyone that has took an interest in this case should take some time to visit and read his research.

Meantime, the public will just have to wait for the Department of Health to find these 'missing' documents and the 211 children [now adults] will have to endure yet more torture as they wait for 'Da Man' to get his finger out of his ass and take his gear stick out of neutral and actually show some human empathy.

I suspect, as is with investigations into GlaxoSmithKline, that they will be waiting a very long time indeed.

Legal Action Against Glaxo for "Guinea Pig Trials"

Image: i.dailymail.co.uk

The Irish Independent is today reporting that legal action is being planned against GlaxoSmithKline and the Sacred Heart Order, which allowed 'human guinea pig' drug trials carried out in church-run children's homes.

The Independent writes:

Hundreds of children are feared to have been subjected to the experimental trials while in the care of the Catholic Church.

Now the victims' cases could be reopened, as calls for the Government to deal with the scandal intensifies.

Legal action is being planned against GlaxoSmithKline and the Sacred Heart Order, which allowed the tests at the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home in Cork.

Campaigner and abuse survivor John Barrett, who was born at the home outside Cork city, was used as a 'human guinea pig' while in Lota industrial school, also in Cork.

"We didn't have a clue what was being done to us at the time," he said. "We only found out years later."

John, now 58, wants to know the truth behind the children's ordeal, who conducted the tests and why such experiments were allowed.

Hundreds of youngsters in children's homes are believed to have been used in trials in the Sixties and Seventies to improve vaccines for tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.

John was used in four different experiments when he was aged 12 and 13 at the Lota home.

He said: "All of the boys of my age were taken off and given tests, X-rays and general examinations.

"Lists were made of those deemed to be 'healthy' and we would sometimes be lined up in one of the dormitories and given massive injections.

"We didn't know what we were being given. Later blood tests would be taken and those whose scars from the first injection had disappeared were given a second dose.

"Over a couple of years, this happened about four times. I don't think they were the normal injections you would expect.

"There is a major inquiry into child abuse so there should be a similar inquiry set up alongside it into medical experiments on children."

This isn't the first time GlaxoSmithKline have been accused of 'experimenting' on orphans. In 2004, The Guardian newspaper ran with the headline: "UK firm tried HIV drug on orphans"

The article, by Antony Barnett, was hard hitting and tied GlaxoSmithKline to a series of dangerous medical experiments on children from the Incarnation Children's Centre, a New York care home that specialises in treating HIV sufferers. The centre was run by Catholic charities.

Glaxo's corporate motto is:

"GlaxoSmithKline, a leading healthcare company that helps people to do more, feel better and live longer."

13 Months Jail Term For Glaxo's Hired Psychiatrist

Jim Edwards over at Bnet is reporting that Dr. Maria Carmen Palazzo, a crooked doctor, was yesterday sent to prison for the role she played in conducting fraudulent clinical trials.

Neworleans.com takes up the story:

DR. MARIA CARMEN PALAZZO, age 58, pled guilty in federal court today before U. S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon to fifteen (15) counts of failing to prepare and maintain records, with intent to defraud and mislead, in connection with clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Paxil in children and adolescents with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, PALAZZO, who specialized in psychiatry, was a clinical investigator for SmithKline Beecham d/b/a GlaxoSmithKline, was involved in two clinical trials evaluating Paxil's safety and effectiveness in children and adolescents. Some of the study records indicated that PALAZZO included psychiatric diagnoses inconsistent with patients' psychiatric histories; prepared multiple psychiatric evaluations on study patients which contained different diagnoses and treatment plans; reported symptoms of OCD when PALAZZO knew that the study subject did not demonstrate such symptoms; and reported that PALAZZO examined study subjects when she had not.

PALAZZO is currently serving an 87 month prison sentence after being convicted of 39 counts of health care fraud following a 12-day trial in April 2008. In the instant case, PALAZZO was sentenced to thirteen (13) months in prison to run concurrent to the previous sentence as well as serve one (1) year of supervised release during which time she will be under federal supervision and risk additional imprisonment should she violate any rules of the release. Additionally, PALAZZO was ordered to pay restitution to GlaxoSmithKline in the amount of $91,824 and $1,500 in special assessments.

To be honest, it would appear that Palazzo has taken the heat for GlaxoSmithKline here. Yes, she deserves to rot in a cell for hiding and manipulating data but one has to ask why she did it. Was she prompted to manipulate the data in such a way that made Paxil [UK brand name, Seroxat] appear safe and effective in children?

It's a start I suppose and one that will no doubt have other Glaxo hired guns quaking in their boots. It hopefully should give Glaxo execs sleepless nights too. Maybe at some point they will be hauled in front of the courts and asked to explain why they did not alert people to raised suicide risks associated with Paxil.

They should start with JP Garnier. Here's an interview with him from a couple of years ago. You will note his denial about the whole Paxil cover-up. Play to the end and hear Garnier throw a hissy fit and leave the interview in a huff.

Edwards has pulled some documents from the trial, some of which can be seen by visiting the bnet website.

Tom Sawyer Had ADHD - More Delusional Rants From The Nutty Professor Brigade

"Everyone look at me...I've got a chemical imbalance" - Image: audiobooksonline.com

Just when you thought it was safe to start reading books of fiction...

Tom Sawyer had Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]... apparently.

An article published online at Slate by Anne Applebaum shows apparent proof from Mark Twain’s 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer', that Sawyer had ADHD.

Applebaum writes:

He [Tom Sawyer] clearly has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder — ADHD — as well, judging by his inability to concentrate in school. "The harder Tom tried to fasten his mind on his book, the more his mind wandered," Twain writes at one point. Unable to focus ("Tom's heart ached to be free"), he starts playing with a tick. This behavior is part of a regular pattern: A few days earlier in church (where he had to sit "as far away from the open window and the seductive outside summer scenes as possible"), Tom had been unable to pay attention to the sermon and played with a pinch bug instead.

Whatever next?

The character Barry Guiler from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind had tinitus? [Play the five tones - [Doo-Dee-Doo-Daa-Daa]

Or maybe Luke Skywalker had small penis syndrome, hence the need for him to walk around clutching a large lightsaber?

Maybe Chief Brody [Jaws] reluctance to step in to the water was down to aquaphobia or maybe he had rabies?

Reminds me of the Mr. Men series of books and how Glaxo jumped at a great advertising opportunity.

Back in 2003, Roger Hargreaves son, Adam, wrote a book entitled 'Mr. Sneeze and His Allergies'. It told how Mr Sneeze starts to sneeze "in the middle of summer". His friend Little Miss Sunshine suggests he may have hayfever.

It continued by telling the reader [Children] that Miss Sunshine discovered that he was allergic to the feathers in his pillow. All good educational stuff one would assume but why tell children about allergies?

Step forward the genius that is GSK.

The story was followed by four pages of information on allergies from Allergy UK and two pages promoting the use Piriteze and Piriton.

Both Piriteze and Piriton are sold by GlaxoSmithKline and according to this source the book was paid for by GlaxoSmithKline.

Maybe, if the nutty professor brigade have their way, future copies of Goldilocks and the Three Bears will have advice in the back of the book on kleptomania, afterall, Goldilocks did steal the porridge now, didn't she?

Or maybe the Sleeping Beauty books will be published in the future with a warning of Narcolepsy or sleep apnoea written into the preface?

Thumbalina, obviously, will have a severe case of Dwarfism whilst The Three Little Pigs were more than likely abused by their mother - what mother would send her children out into the big bad world anyhow?

Tom Sawyer had ADHD?

'Peter Meter' Youth Program Halted

Insert penis here! Image: boingboing.net

Sounds quite innocent doesn't it? Until you learn that 'Peter' is a euphemism for the word 'Penis' and the meter is a device in which young boys placed their 'Peter's' as part of a program run at the Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Andrea James, a Los Angeles-based writer, writes about this extensively HERE

Nothing surprises me any more with regard to the games certain elements of psychiatry plays with their guinea pig subjects.

The program, writes Andrea James, was where troubled youths had a device placed on their penises while they were subjected to media depicting stuff like rape and child pornography.

One can only surmise at the thinking behind such a program. Did the 'inventor' suddenly wake up in the middle of the night and think, "I know, let's start sticking some young boy's penises into a machine, show them child pornography and rape and see if they get aroused"?

One has to question the motives behind such a test. Maybe the psychiatrists involved had lurid thoughts over child porn and rape and wanted to see if it was normal to do so, or maybe they were just bored with the goings-on at Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services in Burnaby, British Columbia so decided to spice things up with a game of Dick Charades with a group of young boys?

A game of Monopoly or Cluedo may have sufficed.

Andrea James delves deeper in her article and shows how a program in the mid-20th century, nicknamed the "fruit machine," led to over 9,000 Canadian citizens being investigated as suspected homosexuals!

Wikipedia writes of the "fruit machine":

"Fruit machine" is a jocular term for a device developed in Canada that was supposed to be able to identify homosexual people, or "fruits". The subjects were made to view pornography, and the device measured the diameter of the pupils of the eyes (pupillary response test), perspiration, and pulse for a supposed erotic response.

The fruit machine was employed in Canada in the 1950s and 1960s during a campaign to eliminate all homosexuals from the civil service, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the military. A substantial number of workers did lose their jobs. Although funding for the "fruit machine" project was cut off in the late 1960s, the investigations continued, and the RCMP collected files on over 9,000 suspected homosexuals.

The chair was like one from a dentist's office. It had a pulley with a camera going towards the pupils. There was a black box in front of it that showed pictures. The pictures ranged from the mundane to sexually explicit photos of men and women. It had previously been determined that the pupils would dilate in relation to the amount of interest in the picture. This was called the pupillary response test.

Andrea James' article is a must read and could be suggested that it is evidence that certain factions of psychiatry have some serious issues with themselves and use programs such as the 'Peter Meter' to amuse nobody but themselves.

Later this year, former 'resident' of the Oak Ridge facility in Penetanguishene, Steve Smith, takes on another barbaric form of psychiatry in a lawsuit.

Smith was part of the Capsule Program and was allegedly bombarded with a series of drugs intended to break his resistance and to bring out so-called "hidden psychosis."

You can read more about Steve Smith's experience HERE

Questions were also raised once again last year when 22 year old Kulmiye Aganeh died at Penetanguishene Mental Health Centre. There was an apparent altercation involving Kulmiye and several staff members, ultimately ending with the physically healthy man, already in waist-to-wrist restraints, being given an injection. Minutes later, his body lay motionless on the floor.

Prescription for Bribery

Image: topnews.in

The Independent reported on Saturday that the world's largest pharmaceutical companies are facing a corruption investigation in the US over claims that the hospitality lavished on those who prescribe their treatments could constitute bribery.

Alistair Dawber of the Independent writes:

Britain's two biggest drug groups, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and AstraZeneca, are among those facing the investigation, which is being carried out jointly by the Department of Justice (DoJ) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The investigation is thought to centre around allegations that drugs companies might have contravened the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), which limits their ability to spend on such "soft' inducements" as hospitality, charitable donations and other non-business activities.

The list of the companies under investigation contains many of the global pharma industry's biggest names: Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Eli Lilly are among those under the spotlight.

The DoJ is looking into claims that the industry has for years ignored obligations under anti-bribery legislation, and that the situation is so stark, some of the hospitality extended to those that buy treatments could amount to bribery.

The probe is into activities outside the US. If found guilty, the industry could face fines totalling millions of dollars.

Both GSK and AstraZeneca acknowledged the investigation yesterday. It is understood that GSK received a letter at the end of April, which said that the DoJ was making preliminary inquiries under the FCPA.

"GSK confirms that investigations by the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding the sales and marketing of pharmaceutical products outside of the USA have commenced," the group said in a statement. "These inquiries relate to the USA Foreign and Corrupt Practices Act. GSK has been contacted by these agencies in this context and is helping with the preliminary inquiries."

This news comes on the back of a recent twenty minute documentary that was aired on Aljazeera.
The documentary investigates how drug companies put profits before patients and focuses on Johnson & Johnson's Risperdal and GlaxoSmithKline's Avandia.

Pay particular attention to Joseph Biederman [15.26]. Biederman is a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School. Footage in this film shows Biederman speaking under oath. He is asked, "Professor, what rank are you?"

BIEDERMAN: Full Professor

"What's after that?"

BIEDERMAN: God

"Did you say God?"

BIEDERMAN: Yeah

The most worrying thing about Biederman's claim is that it appears as though he actually believes in what he is saying.

The documentary also highlights how Risperdal has allegedly caused many young boys to grow breasts.

It's a must watch.

Twist & Release Those Bottle Tops

Image: med.umich.edu

In a brazen new move leading paediatric psychiatrists are calling for the eradication of child proof bottles.

All bottles, they claim, should have those annoying 'push down and unscrew' bottle tops replaced with the more user-friendly type.

Leading psychiatrist and co author of The Diagnostic and Statistical Invention Manual of Disorders (DIM), Prof. Ian Nutter, said, "It seems pointless these days manufacturing child-proof bottles when the majority of mental disorders we conjure up are aimed at this particular population."

Most major pharmaceutical companies are expected to back the proposal. Dick Stillhard, CEO of pharma giants, FakeoJonesKlutz [FJK], told a packed seminar, "For years children have had difficulty in opening our product range. We live in a time where children are our biggest customers and we wish to make it easier for them to access the medicines that have been prescribed to them."

When questioned about the safety and protection of children Fakeo spokesperson, Dr Jenna Side, said, "The safety of the patients, including children, who take our medicines is of fundamental importance to FakeoJonesKlutz. We take very seriously our commitment to patient safety."

World wide medicine regulators are also expected to back the move. In a press statement, Mike Oxbig, communications officer and representative of the regulative industry, said, "We have discussed this issue with our attorneys and see no reason why it should not be implemented with immediate effect. It would be hypocritical of us to oppose this motion seeing as we allow children to take medicine that was meant for adults, such as Fuxil, Poozac, LeFuxor and other medicines of those ilk."

The move is set to enrage patient groups and regulators are expecting a deluge of Freedom of Information requests [FOI] from activists. Attorneys for the medicine regulators, Ben Dover & Swindle Associates, have said to have already printed off over 100,000 standard replies using such words as 'may', 'could', 'possibly', 'perhaps' and 'vexatious'. FOI rules and regulations have also been updated in compliance with those of the pharmaceutical industry. A regulations spokeswoman, Cy Kocess, pointed out that this would just be happening with medicines and not with dangerous household goods such as bleach, disinfectant and glucose drinks.

A Pill To Prevent Lesbianism? Ave Maria!

Image: nakedauthors.com

When I first glanced at the headline in the UK's Daily Mail I thought it was about a pill to deter some form of malaria in Lebanon. Not so.

It now seems some head shrinker has come up with the novel idea of deterring women drinking from the furry cup.

Sorry to be course but this post deserves a touch of humour.

According to research, writes the Daily Mail, a prenatal pill prescribed to women expecting daughters with a rare genetic disorder, could reduce the chance of their children becoming lesbians.

The Daily Mail continues:

Medics, including Dr Maria New of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, have championed a hormonal treatment that prevents the ambiguous genitalia developing in the womb - sparing the need for surgery later in life.

But it is not without its side effects - including potentially having a dramatic impact on a person's sexual orientation.

Now, I don't know whether this is just sensationalism from the Daily Mail. Burning question, I guess, would be how do they know this would be a side-effect?

The Mail explains:

The LA Times reported that Dr New's more recent studies on the treatment, using the steroid dexamethasone, resulted in girls who behave in ways that are considered more traditionally feminine.

The report quoted a 2008 study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior in which Dr New questioned 143 women with CAH who had not been treated prenatally.

The study found that most of the women were heterosexual - but that the rates of homosexuality and bisexuality were far higher in women with the condition when compared to a control group.
The report then cited a paper published earlier this year in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences by Dr New and her colleagues.

Maria New issued the following statement:

'Allegations that my goal is to prevent lesbianism are completely untrue.'

She is probably sincere and this post means her no malice. It's a pop at those who meddle with nature when there really is no call for it.

Once again, it would appear, we have quackery interfering with what nature intended.

Please don't bombard me with the God delusions here folks. "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" - it does not wash with me.

If two humans want to become one, be it through love and affection or through sex then nobody, not you, not me, not some outdated religious belief based on a book of fiction and almost definitely not quackery, should question why.

I can almost hear the minds of the Christians... "Yes, at last, someone who can obliterate the crew-cut, dungaree wearing, carpet munching brigade." Then again, the act of sexual intercourse is seemingly so abhorrent in Christianity that even the parents of Jesus didn't fornicate [apparently]

Who knows, maybe there are some Christians who believe that Maria New is the second coming and her colleagues, her disciples?

Ave Maria New!

I've read some pretty laughable diagnosis' over the years. Shyness being one... Don't worry, there was a cure for that in the shape of Paxil [Seroxat]

If, indeed, there is a deep rooted motive behind the research of Maria New and her colleagues then you can bet your life that those mad scientists who compile The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [DSM] will be on it as fast as a fly on a dog turd.

Loving someone of the same sex is not abnormal and it should not be eradicated. If Julie and Ann prefer the undercarriage to the piston then more power to them. Same applies to Adam and Steve if they prefer playing a game of hide the salami with one another.

Gay people should be allowed to live their lives as they choose. If people protest then it is 'they' that have the problem.

**Disclaimer

I am a heterosexual whose only desire is to play hide the salami with hot Canadian country singers who go by the name of Shania Twain. [Hope my current girlfriend doesn't chastise me for this... oh yes baby, slap me up real good]

Man, I feel like a woman.

***Disclaimer 2

The use of derogatory comments referring to ones sexuality is meant as sarcasm and is a swipe at those who object to same sex relationships yet see no problem in experimenting new sexual positions with their partners. If 'God' just wanted us to procreate he would not have given us inquisitive minds, in some cases, the mind of a deviant.

For the record - I am an atheist...and probably a deviant too...aren't we all when it comes to mattress dancing, or do you just live in denial about your sexual fantasies?

HEAVYWEIGHT ALLI FAILS AT THE WEIGH-IN

Image: thebiglunch.com

It would appear that Glaxo have failed to make the weight for their 'boxing' promotion of their wannabe super-selling diet pill, Alli.

Wood Trade Marks and Designs Limited of London are reporting via their blog that Glaxo have got the maths all wrong on the new packaging of Alli.

To be honest maths gives me a headache but one would expect the legal bods at Glaxo to get their sums right.

Wood Trade Marks and Designs Limited write:

For example, if you are 4’10” then you should not use it unless you weigh over 63kg. They convert this as 9 stone 8 pounds.

However.. 63kg is 138.6 pounds. 10 stones is 140 pounds so you’ll understand it is a just under 10 stones – rounded up it is 9 stone 13 pounds.

Alli Conversion chart

"To see if Alli is right for you..."

I asked Aaron Wood, who writes the Wood Trade Marks and Designs Limited blog, how he stumbled upon the blunder. He told me:

Well my wife uses Alli and we saw that the figures on the back of the pack giving the safe weights for use of the product just didn't reconcile with what we were getting on scales and other conversion systems.

I spent a while trying to work out how they got such an easy bit of maths wrong. I realised they had turned the kg to pounds then just divided by 14. This gets the equivalent stones right, but the number of pounds needs to be converted back.

He added:

My concern is that people who are too light to use it safely will end up taking it because of the mistake.

If Aaron Wood has got his maths right then this is some blunder by Glaxo, particularly if people are being sold Alli who really shouldn't be using it at all due to weight restrictions/warnings.

If Glaxo cannot convert kg to stone then I dread to think what they must be doing with raw data for their other blockbuster drugs.

One has to question the folk at the MHRA too. Surely they check these things? That's what regulators of medicines do, isn't it?

If proved right, both Glaxo and the MHRA owe the public an apology and Aaron Wood should be given the credit for doing the regulators job.

Fresh Woes for Glaxo's Lamictal

Image: onlinepharmacycr.com

The Daily Telegraph [UK Tabloid] is today reporting that the Food and Drug Administration [FDA], the US equivalent of the MHRA, are working with GlaxoSmithKline to update the labelling for its anti seizure drug, Lamictal.

The Telegraph writes:

40 cases of aseptic meningitis, which causes inflammation of the tissue layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord but is less serious than bacterial meningitis, were identified in patients taking Lamictal between December 1994 – when the drug was approved – and November 2009.

The article adds:

A spokesman for GSK said that in July, the company had agreed with the FDA to add aseptic meningitis to Lamictal's prescription information and medication guide.

How nice of them.

Full story HERE

You can read one person's story of their withdrawal from Glaxo's Lamictal over at Beyond Meds. It's shocking stuff. The author, Giana Kali writes:

I started the second phase of my Lamictal withdrawal three days ago. I was on 400 mg of it for many years. Several months ago I went off 200 mg of it. It was rough, but only in that I was greatly fatigued. Today, three days after cutting 25 mg from my still remaining 200 mg I am going ape-shit.

SEROXAT SUFFERERS GOES OVER THE 200,000 MARK!

Today saw my blog go over the 200,000 hits barrier. I started writing this blog in April 2006, basically I was frustrated at the lack of transparency the UK Medicines Regulator [MHRA] were showing me with a series of questions I was putting to them about the antidepressant, Seroxat.

My first post on here came in April 2006. However, I didn't add a counter to my blog until a year later.

The graph below shows the rise in yearly hits. 2010 takes you up to the present day and looks as though this year may also be exceeding expectations.

The next graph shows web hits from last year [2009] and those from this year [2010] - a significant increase in traffic.

My early work on here saw me parody both the MHRA and employees of GlaxoSmithKline. This, I believe, helped me secure a meeting with the MHRA, although they will claim they agreed to meet with me because of my grave concerns regarding withdrawal on Seroxat and other SSRi's.

That meeting seems a long time ago now. The concerns I raised were listened to and... well, that's about it. Nothing has been done.

I also secured a meeting, or rather got the MHRA to agree to meet with withdrawal expert on all matters relating to SSRi's, David Healy.

David met with them approximately one year after I did. He presented the MHRA a withdrawal guidance for SSRi's/SNRi's.

That guidance has never been used or promoted by the MHRA.

It is abundantly clear, to me at least, that the MHRA refuse to acknowledge there is a severe problem with Seroxat and other SSRi's. If they thought there was a problem then they would have done something about it. Wouldn't they?

I ceased my communications with the MHRA sometime last year. I was frustrated at their fence sitting [lack of transparency] with regard to whether or not Seroxat was a teratogen.

There are many people, the same people the MHRA are supposed to protect, that take Seroxat and other SSRi's on trust. They do so because their doctor tells them it is safe, doctor's say this because the MHRA have not got balls of steel and despite overwhelming evidence refuse to make any kind of official statement regarding the withdrawal issues of this particular class of drugs.

A database on their website showing adverse reactions is NOT good enough.

1. Not everybody has access to the Internet

2. Christopher Columbus would have difficulty navigating their website

3. Their adverse reaction reporting system is old-fashioned and despite promises of a re-vamp, it remains old-fashioned

4. The MHRA are wholly funded by the pharmaceutical industry

5. Their Chairman, Alasdair Breckenridge, is a former employee of GlaxoSmithKline and has gone on record claiming, “... The so-called scandal of Seroxat is something I want to nail every time I speak in front of compatriots because it is absolute rubbish”.

6. The MHRA's Director of Licensing, Ian Hudson, was the former World Safety Officer at GlaxoSmithKline. His spell at Glaxo saw him have a "significant involvement" with a number of drugs, in particular, Seroxat.

7. Later this year sees a number of people taking on GlaxoSmithKline in the High Court in London. All, myself included, had trouble with Seroxat's withdrawal issues. One of the witnesses being called by GlaxoSmithKline, to no doubt play down these withdrawal problems, is Dr. Rashmi Shah. Shah was an employee of the MHRA between 1987 and 2004.

I am glad I started this blog. I have made many friends, more so than enemies.

Special thanks go out to the following, each have helped promote the work that I have done and continue to do.

This is for you all. Each and every one of you rock!

I salute you.

This one goes out to the obsessive cyberstalker [GlaxoSmithKline whore and defender of Seroxat] who thought creating a shadow blog to this one would detract visitors from coming here.

There have been times when I have considered throwing the towel in but I kept going with support from a very dear friend whose words of encouragement drive me on.

Although she is many miles away, we have arranged to meet sometime next year. I cannot go into too much detail but I am up for an award which is being presented to me in the United States early next year, something that I am immensely proud of. She will accompany me and be my date for the night.

Who knows what will blossom?

My book, The Evidence, However, Is Clear...The Seroxat Scandal, is set for release as a paperback later this year, it's currently with a professional editing service.

Things are looking up.

Thank you all for your continued support.
