Russell Wills and self-reinforcing delusion disorder

New Zealand Children's Commissioner and paediatrician Russell Wills

I have to laugh at these so called 'experts' who go in font of TV camera's and profess how safe antidepressant medication is in children. There is a point where the laughing must stop though and where the knucklehead, in this case, New Zealand's Children's Commissioner and paediatrician Russell Wills, goes too far with opinionated bile.

Wills appeared on TVNZ and, without even blinking, told viewers how safe antidepressants are in children.

Wills, when asked if there was an unnecessary use of antidepressants in children, offered this:

"No, I don't. If that was the case I would be worried but my experience of this is that only pediatricians and psychiatrists, who've got experience of using these drugs, use them very cautiously, carefully, explain the side effects really well to parents and make sure that they are aware of those."

When asked about the increased suicide rates in clinical trials and if the long term effects of treating young children with antidepressants, Wills replied:

"What we know is that these medicines of very good in the short term and they relieve the stress, and these children that we are seeing are terribly distressed children and the medicines take the edge off that so that those psychological therapies can have their effects.

"In terms of long term side effects, they seem to be reasonably safe and the newer generation of these medicines even more so."

Just a few points Dr Wills.

1. Exactly what side effects do you relay to the parents of these children that you prescribe drugs that are not recommended for use in children?

2. Do you mention the suicidal thoughts their children may get or the thoughts of hostility?

3.Would you be on hand to offer your utmost condolences should any child patient of yours kills themselves on the drug you prescribed to them?

4. Define "terribly distressed" and please explain how you measure levels of distress.

5. Regarding the long term side effects of antidepressant drugs, including the "newer generation", what long term studies can you provide that shows your claims that they are "reasonably safe"?

Finally, Dr Wills, have you ever heard of self-reinforcing delusions?

Check your book of psychiatric illnesses then ask yourself if you need to be treated for this because judging by your performance on TV it would appear that you have this disorder. I'm only guessing of course. That puts us both in the same boat eh? You are prescribing drugs to kids on guesswork and I'm labelling you with "self-reinforcing delusions."

Not nice to have the tables turned is it Doctor?

Call it reverse psychology, if you will.
