The inquest into the death of Ontario's Sara Carlin begins on November 2nd. The Oakville Beaver, a local newspaper that serves the residents of Oakville, Ontario reports that the inquest will 'focus on the role of selective antidepressants in teenage suicides.' I believe this to be incorrect as Sara's death was Paxil/Seroxat related. No doubt further press releases will clarify this.
I first started writing about the death of Sara Carlin in July 2008 when I read an article in the Oakville Beaver, 'Sara Carlin: A life cut way too short'
Sara took her life on May 6th 2007, she was just 18.
Initially, Regional Supervising Coroner, Dr. David Evans, denied Sara's parents, Neil and Rhonda, request for a public inquest claiming that 'an inquest must serve the public interest' and 'such an inquest into Sara’s death would not do that.' He also said a jury would not make useful recommendations that could prevent similar deaths in the future.
A Canadian advocate was so incensed that she wrote to the Canadian Medicine regulator, Health Canada. I, myself, aired my disgust and even awarded Dr. David Evans the Seroxat Sufferers Dumbass Award.
Neil and Rhonda also met with Ontario’s newly-appointed Chief Coroner, Dr. Andrew McCallum, as part of an appeal process to the regional coroner’s decision.
Thankfully on Dec 31, 2008 the Oakville Beaver reported that both Neil and Rhonda were granted request into the death of their daughter.
I shall be watching this inquest with a keen interest. I have nothing but admiration for the grit and determination shown by the Carlin's.
Sara should never have been prescribed Paxil. Her care was put into the hands of the medical profession who, like millions of other doctors world-wide, just do not know how dangerous this particular SSRi can be in children.
I cannot begin to imagine what it feels like to lose a child - for parents to practically beg for an inquest means there is something drastically wrong with the system - we already know there is something drastically wrong with Paxil - hopefully the inquest will recommend to doctors that they need to be made aware of this too!
