1.5 Million

My blog counter tells me that I've gone over 1.5 million hits on this little old blog of mine.

I know it may have been just a few minutes people have spent reading and commenting on my blog, but I’d just like to say thanks. It really means a lot to know that people feel my work is important enough to read and comment on. A million (and a half) thanks to those of you who 'like' and share my work on Facebook and Twitter too - it is down to you people that so many lives could be saved from the harms caused by the group of medicines I write about.

I've made many friends, in the main those people whose lives have been blighted by antidepressants - dealing with their own losses, be that partners, siblings, parents or friends. I've said it before, I wish that our paths had never crossed ~ the only reason I have made friends with this wonderful group of people is down to their tragic loss - I would willingly give up that friendship if they could turn back the clocks and be with their loved ones again.

Attorneys, journalists, fellow bloggers, film-makers, authors and health care professionals have also joined my growing list of friends whilst I've been on this 10 year journey - the subject matter has been overwhelming at times but I've learned how to cope with it all - I'm lucky because writing about a kid killing himself is a lot easier than having to live through that experience on a daily basis.

In the main, I write about Seroxat (Paxil) and the company that market and manufacture it, namely; GlaxoSmithKline. I have also tried to cover many other antidepressant stories through the medium of this blog - My guest posts have proved popular be they on antidepressant addiction, induced suicide, homicide or about birth defects.

I'm not a fan of pharmaceutical companies in general, nor medicine regulators - in fact they should drop the word 'regulators' because they really don't regulate much at all.

I started writing over 10 years ago, it took just under 8 years to reach a million views and just over two to add 500,000 - It has grown, kind of snowballed if I'm being honest and nobody is more surprised than me regarding its popularity - it's been the making of me.

Thank you all once again.

Saying Goodbye

I created this blog way back in April 2006. Initially I had a gripe with the British drug regulator, the MHRA.

I was concerned because I had suffered at the hands of GlaxoSmithKline's Seroxat, known as Paxil in the US.

Over the last nine years or so I've had an online stalker who, along with his internet acquaintance, stalked me and impersonated me online, at times targeting the parents of the victims that I had wrote about.

I've been threatened with legal action by one of GlaxoSmithKline's former employees (he was employed by them at the time)

I've met with the British drug regulator on numerous occasions, those meetings turned out to be as useful as a chocolate teapot.

I've met some wonderful people on my journey, even had intimate relationships with two of those I met, one of which, I regret.

In the main, I've covered many stories about children/teenagers who have succumbed to antidepressant use. I hope I have brought their parents some peace and satisfaction with my efforts. I hope I have drawn awareness to the dangers of these mind-numbing drugs that have, for many, caused nothing but heartache.

I've been fighting almost alone for nearly nine years with the blog work, dealing with other's grief, emptiness, and sadness. It's come to a point where it has just consumed me and, to be honest, I have to change things in my life after suffering a recent loss of my own.

It's hard to put my finger on any one story I've covered on this blog. Sara Carlin springs to mind. Through her death I met two wonderful friends in Neil and Rhonda - I hope to meet them again one day.

I was immensely proud to be presented two human rights awards from the Citizen's Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), one being presented to me in the US and one here in the UK. The CCHR introduced me to some wonderful people, many of whom still keep in touch with me via social media websites.

I was also very proud when this old blog of mine went over one million visits, a quick look now shows the counter at 1,189,171. Not bad for a Brummie who was expelled from school and told, "You will never make anything of yourself Fiddaman."

I had always dreamed of seeing my name on the front cover of a book - I achieved that too with my book, 'The evidence, however, is clear: The Seroxat scandal'.

During the past nine years I've seen new blogs appear... and then disappear. It's a tough game this blogging lark, kinda takes it out of you when you are the one that people turn to because they are addicted to antidepressants or they have lost a child to antidepressants or even given birth to a child with deformities due to antidepressants. It can be a very dark, lonely place when you take on stories such as these. They sit with you forever.

I'm pretty much running on an empty tank these days and am just bamboozled by the unkind acts and hardheartedness of some people.

To be honest, I'm exhausted by it all. I never ever thought that one of my foes would turn out to be the very same person who I tried to help by highlighting their plight on this blog, on numerous occasions. That toxicity for you folks!

I'm done with opening my email each day and seeing attachments hundreds of pages long and being asked, "have you seen this?"

I'm done with staying up until the early hours of the morning helping people find justice only to have them ignore me when my efforts found them the justice they craved (money)

I'm done with reading about GlaxoSmithKline making settlements to mothers who have had the misfortune of giving birth to children with serious defects. Done with it all.

During the last three weeks I've been to hell and back, I've still got a long way to go, I'm still struggling to come to terms with the whole 'gone in the blink of an eye'.

Deal with it I will, but I cannot continue being consumed by other people's lives, it's zapping my energy and causing bad vibes. I just need to get in sync with myself and start a new journey, one that doesn't involve the loss of loved ones. Losing someone you love is quite possibly the worst feeling in the world.

I started work on a new novel yesterday, it's been therapeutic. I don't know when it will be finished, don't even know how it will end but it's fiction and I can go pretty much anywhere I want with it.

It's called "No Other Man"

One day I hope to see it published.

For now, I'm saying goodbye.

I'll leave the last words for Sara...

ONE MILLION!

Well, I made it.

My hits went over the one million mark a short while ago. My original Blogger counter went from 999,999 to 100,000 at around 11.30am UK time. I think Blogger counters only have 6 digits so I've just installed a new counter.

A few thanks must go out to the following...

Dad - His sense of pride in me has kept my feet firmly on the ground. - I salute you

Mom - You passed on that old Irish stubbornness, I hope you are still throwing those bricks. - I salute you

My sisters, Deb and Jan. There may have been times when I've appeared frustrated and distant. Thanks for standing by me and showing your support.

My boys - Danny, Marc and Gary - Collectively you are alive in me. Part of you all has become the writer.

Benn - My four-legged friend, thank you for the walks and the company when I was mulling things over. - I salute you

CCHR International, UK, and Canada - These guys rock and they honoured me a few years back with a couple of awards. I met people because of them. I travelled because of them. I learned that this wasn't just about Seroxat and withdrawal. It was about many other antidepressant type medications. Marla, Jan, Lori, Margaret, Sue & Brian, for showing me how to flourish as a writer, as a human. CCHR still rock, they still honour the men and women on the street, normal people, like you and me. - I salute you

Rob Robinson - The Godfather of Paxil activists. You kicked some serious ass my friend. Thank you. - I salute you

David Healy - An inspiration and not a maverick. - I salute you

Shelley Jofre - The BBC's own ankle-biter who has investigated GSK, the MHRA and Seroxat on four separate occasions. She kept the fire going in my belly. - I salute you

Neil and Rhonda Carlin - Parents of Sara, who tragically killed herself whilst on Paxil. Your friendship has kept me going, your belief in me has kept me strong. - I salute you

Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman - Top US Attorneys with a great track record against GlaxoSmithKline. I will live forever in your debt. Gary, Rob, Ash, Foz, Mo, Peggy, Liz, Twyla, Michael, Leemon, Cindy - I salute you

The Dixie Chicks, without whom I wouldn't be here. They, unknowingly, helped me through severe Seroxat withdrawal. - I salute you

Sarah-Jane Richards - For the many chats over the phone, for giving me hope, for showing me what tenacity and doggedness are all about. - I salute you

Evelyn Pringle - Investigative journalist who had a real influence on me with her work on the early Paxil cases. - I salute you

Stuart and the late Claudette Jones - A Christmas present every year, you never forgot. Much love to you both. - I salute you

Chipmunka Publishing - For having the balls to publish my book. - I salute you

To all bloggers past and present - you have all been part of my journey. - I salute you

GlaxoSmithKline and their Attorneys - For spectacularly giving me stories to write. As long as you keep messing up, I'll keep writing. - Middle finger salute to you

There are many, many more people I'd like to thank, the list is endless, you all know who you are. - I salute you

A huge thank you to you, the readers. Thank you for your support over the past 8 years. Thank you for coming back time and time again. - I salute you

This post is dedicated to every single man, woman and child [including fetuses] who have lost their lives because of the side effects of SSRi medication. - I salute you.

I salute you all.

The year ahead is looking pretty damn good. Time to stretch those legs.

"You Fat Bastards" - From the Journal of Eating Disorders

DO YOU HAVE NES?
Image: andreadams.com

Oh this is just too good to miss out on without making a comment.

Those men/women in white coats have come up with a gem of a disorder. It's so hilariously funny it puts comedian greats to shame. It's a stand-up comedian's wet dream, an article to do a whole hour of rib-tickling comedy. I was in a state of complete apoplexy upon reading it.

So what am I writing about?

Wait, this gem requires a drum roll.

**Drum roll

On April 20 the Montreal Gazette ran with a story entitled, "Experts want 'night eating' recognized as disorder", it was written by Sharon Kirkey.

The headline kind of gives the article away. One should know what to expect when they see the words 'expert' and 'disorder' appear in the same sentence.

Apparently this disorder affects hundreds of thousands of Canadians.

Kirkey writes:

It starts with "morning anorexia," skipping breakfast more days than not and by dinnertime all bets are off. People eat and graze compulsively, from dinner to bedtime, and even wake in the middle of the night to eat more. Half a century after it was first described, night eating syndrome — a phenomenon where people consume at least one-quarter of their daily calories after the evening meal — is poised to become the newest eating disorder.

Excuse me for a few seconds... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Have you ever heard anything so utterly ridiculous?

Oh shit! put down those nibbles you have an eating disorder.

I envisage cinemas throughout Canada will be pulling down the shutters on the popcorn stands or asking customers if they have already eaten before they left home. I can see the government health warnings on the buckets of popcorn or M&M's throughout Canadian theatres, "GOVERNMENT HEALTH WARNING - Eating popcorn or confectionery between meals may mean you have a fat bastard disorder. Talk to your doctor if you feel you cannot stop munching on snacks between meals."

For patrons falling asleep in cinemas we will have usherettes shining torches so the sleepy lot can be recognised then refused service at the hot dog stall in the foyer. "I'm sorry sir, you have been asleep and eating after you wake in the middle of the night means that we cannot legally serve you...the ambulance to the psychiatry unit is outside waiting for you."

Honestly, this is just so absurd...but wait...there's more.

This disorder has been given a label, you know just like OCD, ADHD etc. Yup, night eating syndrome is known as NES.

One moment...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

It should come as no surprise that NES [sniggers] comes from the self-proclaimed International NES Working Group [guffaw] and was published recently in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

Burp...excuse me I've just finished eating a Cornetto and it's 10.48pm.

Other 'disorders' include:

Morning anorexia — lack of desire to eat in the morning and/or skipping breakfast four or more mornings per week.

Yup, that's me.

A strong urge to eat between dinner and sleep and/or during the night.

Strong urge? Nah, I just eat because my stomach sends signals to my brain and tells it that food intake is due. It's called being hungry.

A belief that one must eat in order to get to sleep

Well, if one didn't eat then obviously one wouldn't be able to sleep, unless they were severely malnourished, sleep then would hit them like a runaway train.

Depressed mood or a worsening in mood in the evening.

Oh, I get it now...this is about mood disorders. There's that magical pharmaceutical seller - the word 'depressed'. Genius. Here's a bit of Fiddaman psychology for you. People may feel blue at night, it's when most humans mull things over, it's the silence in the bedroom that makes us think of the days ahead or of those gone by. Those unpaid bills, the weekly meeting at work etc. Watching evening news bulletins hardly brings a smile to anyones face either...unless rape, murder, starvation, catastrophes and war makes you happy. Psychology lesson over.

The International Journal of Eating Disorders adds:

People must be aware of their nocturnal ingestions (eating upon waking at night); and

The signs and symptoms have persisted for at least three months and are causing significant distress or impaired functioning.

I'll have to watch my eating habits. Looks like I'll have to throw away my 'Joy of Sex' book! Sorry ladies.

Pfizer's Stranglehold on the Canadian Market

Image: nydailynews.com

Pharmaceutical giants, Pfizer, have been putting it about lately. Not content with teaming up with the UK medicines regulator [The MHRA] they have now branched further afield and teamed up with the Canadian Medical Association.

Pfizer, whose rap sheet is almost as big as GlaxoSmithKline's, have been causing me concern over the past year or so. With no advertising allowed for prescription drugs here in the UK they, it would appear, are advertising on TV and radio...by proxy.

Back in January 2009 I reported how the British drug regulator, the MHRA, had teamed up with Pfizer in a massive public relations exercise with regard to fake prescription drugs being purchased over the internet. The MHRA teamed up with Pfizer to launch a series of advertisements throughout British cinemas, later they would get the message out on TV advertising slots.

The advertisement campaign was hard-hitting and, I believe, designed to stop people buying cheaper drugs on the internet. All above board... or so we were led to believe.

The advert depicted a male opening a parcel and highlighted just how dangerous it could be when buying drugs over the internet. Here's the 30 second ad.

You'll note that viewers are directed to a website at the end of the ad. The website is brought to you by Pfizer. Visitors to the site are greeted with a dark image of a body lying on a coroner's table.

Pfizer have now teamed up with The Canadian Medical Association [CMA] and, according to an article that has appeared in The Globe and Mail, are facing huge criticism.

The CMA have apparently sought the expertise of Pfizer to create an education program for physicians across the country. The Globe and Mail writes:

Some members of the medical community say the CMA is heading down a dangerous road and warn that partnering with Pfizer Canada Inc. may cross a serious ethical line that could negatively influence doctors' treatment decisions.

No shit Sherlock!

Pfizer, who manufacturer the controversial antidepressant Zoloft, appear to be slipping through the back door to promote their wares. If they ain;'t teaming up with a limp-wristed medicines regulator, they are worming their way into doctors surgeries throughout Canada. One can only guess at the incentives they will be giving doctors to promote and prescribe their products.

Pfizer also manufacture other drugs that have received less than favourable consumer approval over the years, drugs such as Chantix, Effexor [due to merger with Wyeth in 2009], Neurontin, Viagra, Xanax and Zoloft.

Pfizer pleaded guilty in 2009 to the largest health care fraud in U.S. history and received the largest criminal penalty [$1.19 billion] ever levied for illegal marketing of four of its drugs. One of Pfizer’s drugs they had been pushing doctors to prescribe was the epilepsy drug Neurontin for uses the Food and Drug Administration [FDA] had never approved.

Should alarm bells be ringing in Canada? I think so. With a company who has pleaded guilty to the illegal promotion of marketing a number of drugs for unapproved uses, it would appear that Canada, or in particular the Canadian Medical Association, are giving Pfizer Carte blanche to, once again, be the puppet masters of the medical profession.

I'd bet a week spent in the company of Shania Twain and a box of Viagra [not that I'd need them] that Pfizer are also entering the medical system of other countries too, we just don't know it...yet.

Or maybe I'm just an old cynic.

Teacher sacked for making a stance against the drugging of children

There comes a time in life when you have to stand up for what you believe in.

Tarah Ausburn has stood up. She has been counted.

She may be opinionated but by God, she has my total respect.

Tarah was fired from her job at Imagine Prep High School because she took a stance with regard to the way drugs are handed out to children like candy. Tarah decided to make her voice heard via a bumber sticker on her car which read, "Have you drugged your kid today?"

Woman deserves an award if you ask me.

GSK Boss - Pay Slashed

Current GSK Chief Exec Andrew Witty.
Image: thelancetstudent.com

GSK's Chief Executive, Andrew Witty, has had his annual salary cut due to plunging sales of the controversial diabetes pill Avandia, writes Reuters.

Witty took over the sinking ship a couple of years ago from French multi-millionaire and Monty Burns look-a-like, Jean-Pierre Garnier.

Former GSK Exec JP Garnier
Image: bbc.co.uk

Witty's annual salary dropped £714,000 in 2010.

Reuters writes:

"The shortfall followed plunging sales of controversial diabetes pill Avandia, which was withdrawn from the market in Europe last autumn and severely restricted in the United States after being linked to increased heart risk.

"Witty received an unchanged base salary of 1 million pounds in 2010 but had his bonus reduced by 41 percent to 1.177 million from 2 million in 2009, GSK said in its annual report on Wednesday."

Any spare change, guv?

It amazes me that a Chief Executive in charge of a company, be it Witty or his predecessor Garnier, still walk the streets. Glaxo's lists of misdemeanors seem never ending. Paxil [UK name Seroxat] being top of their shit list...ahem, I mean hit list.

So, when exactly did the rot set in at GlaxoSmithKline?

Come take a journey with me...in video.

Step up to the plate - Dr. Alex Yellowlees

I was utterly flabbergasted this morning when I learned that yet another "media doctor" was handing out stone-age advice regarding the safety and efficacy of antidepressants.

In an article by Julie Anne-Barnes that appeared in the Scottish Daily Mail, she quotes a certain Dr. Alex Yellowlees, who apparently 'specialises in the treatment of depression'

She writes:

"Consultant psychiatrist Dr Alex Yellowlees, who specialises in the treatment of depression, said that the number of prerscriptions for antidepressants had increased rapidly because of their effectiveness.

"He said: 'They work for quite a range of conditions, whether it is anxiety or depression, and there is good therapeutic evidence that they work.'

"'The fact they can deal with a number of issues and are so low on side effects means they are going to be popular. They are clinically effective.'

Yellowlees, according to his online biography, is much sought after by the media for comment on a wide range of psychological issues. His online biography also claims that he is a specialist in eating disorders and is a Medical Director of the Priory Hospital situated in Glasgow, Scotland.

Newspaper articles can often misquote and/or quotes can be taken out of context. If Yellowlees can show me where there is evidence that SSRi's are "so low on side effects" and that is the reason they are "popular".

The MHRA Yellow Card reporting system would suggest that Yellowlees has either been misquoted or he just doesn't know what he is talking about. Search the MHRA Print Outs for adverse reactions to SSRi's.

Early last year I wrote about another "media doctor", Dr Hilary Jones. Jones often gives advice on GMTV, a programme watched by many millions. Jones also gives advice online.

Here's an email he received and his subsequent 'advice'

Should I stop my antidepressants?

Q: After losing my job last year I was diagnosed with mild depression and prescribed Seroxat. I've been on the tablets for a few months and feel much better now. Is it OK to just stop taking them? Jemma, 29

A: The symptoms of depression vary but can include feeling exhausted, tearful, guilty, worthless, and being unable to sleep or eat. When you lost your job you probably experienced some of these symptoms.

It's great that you feel better now, but do you know what has brought about this change? Hopefully you have overcome the problems you suffered when you lost your job, but the Seroxat you've been taking will have boosted the serotonin levels in your brain, making you feel happier.

Your body is used to the effects of the pills, so if you stop taking them suddenly you can experience side effects such as disturbed sleep and flu-like symptoms. Talk to your GP - he may suggest you wean yourself off the pills gradually. Stop taking a tablet every third day for a fortnight, then every other day for a fortnight. Then you should be ready to stop altogether. If the depression returns, go back to your GP for guidance.

"Stop taking a tablet every third day for a fortnight, then every other day for a fortnight. Then you should be ready to stop altogether."

Bad advice Dr Jones.

Bad advice Dr Yellowlees.

Here's the article where Yellowlees is quoted:

Seroxat book almost here

Well, it's been long enough coming but it looks as though my book will be available in print very shortly.

For the past 4 months or so I've been painstakingly working with my editor, Kathy Sharrad. We have chopped and changed and even stripped the original PDF file that has been available for download for the past year or so.

A foreword has been written for me, you will have to wait and see who it is that has wrote it.

I'd like to thank all of those who helped make this happen, all those who blog on a regular basis, all those that keep coming back to read my work, all those that have offered their support since the creation of this blog 5 years ago.

The encouragement offered when I wanted to throw the towel in on the whole project will never be forgotten.

I'm very proud of the book. I hope you all find it informative and I hope it gives a wake up call to those who think everything is peachy with the way SSRi's are regulated here in the UK, in particular, Seroxat.

From next week I will be taking a short break. I'll tell you all why upon my return.

Exciting times ahead it would appear.

Chapters for the book, The evidence, however, is clear...the Seroxat scandal, of which there are 21, are as follows:

Chapter 1: Highway to hell
Chapter 2: Cold turkey
Chapter 3: A chemical imbalance: the serotonin myth
Chapter 4: Meet with me Mr Woods, part I
Chapter 5: The Yellow Card Scheme
Chapter 6: GlaxoSmithKline
Chapter 7: When the rot set in at GlaxoSmithKline
Chapter 8: Remove your video ... or else!
Chapter 9: Sara and Sharise
Chapter 10: Meet with me Mr Woods, part II
Chapter 11: The meeting and the influence of blogs

Glaxo Pandemic Vaccine Under Scrutiny

Image: .sleep-aid-tips.com

It appears The World Health Organisation [WHO] are reviewing the GlaxoSmithKline pandemic vaccine over ties to narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes excessive sleepiness and frequent daytime sleep attacks.

WHO were alerted to a recent study ,"Increased risk of narcolepsy observed among children and adolescents vaccinated with Pandemrix", whereby the authors found that:

Among those 4-19 years of age who received Glaxo's Pandemrix vaccine had a manifold increased risk of falling ill with narcolepsy during the 8 months following vaccination in comparison to those unvaccinated in the same age group. Based on the evaluation done so far, the National Narcolepsy Task Force finds it probable that Pandemrix®-vaccination contributed to the observed increase in incidence of narcolepsy among those 4 -19 years of age.

The study, conducted in parts of Scandanavia, found that 60 children and adolescents aged 4-19 years fell ill with narcolepsy. The figures were based on data from hospitals and primary care, and the review of individual patient records by a panel of neurologists and sleep researchers. Of those fallen ill, 52 (almost 90 percent) had received Glaxo's Pandemrix vaccine.

The report concludes:

By January 24, 2011, 56 notifications of narcolepsy in association with Pandemrix vaccination have been received by the National Vaccine Adverse Events Register maintained at the National Institute of Health and Welfare in Finland. Of these, 54 cases belonged to the age group of 4–19 years. Among most of the notified cases, the onset of symptoms of narcolepsy had started approximately two months following Pandemrix vaccination.

Not to worry though. The pharma industry can control your narcolepsy with medication such as Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRIs]

...and so the cycle continues...

EMEA ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS SSRI's

Back in October 2010 I made a request under the freedom of information to the European Medicines Agency [EMEA]. My request was partly met by the EMEA but, as ever with these regulatory bodies, lacked transparency.

Yesterday they came through with that request.

I basically wanted a breakdown of adverse reactions caused by each of the SSRi class of drugs.

Instead, the EMEA collated all the adverse reactions stating:

"According to 'Eudravigilance Access Policy for Medicines for Human Use', no medicinal product name can be disclosed can be disclosed upon request..."

A search, they told me, was conducted in Eudravigilance, based on the following criteria:

** Active substance - zimeldine 1; fluoxetine 2; citalopram 3; paroxetine 4; sertraline 5; alaproclate 6; fluvoxamine 7; etoperidone 8; escitalopram 9.

In other words:

1. Zimelidine [Brand names, Normud, Zelmid] has been banned worldwide due to serious, sometimes fatal, cases of central and/or peripheral neuropathy known as Guillain-Barré syndrome and due to a peculiar hypersensitivity reaction involving many organs including skin exanthema, flu-like symptoms, arthralgias, and sometimes eosinophilia. Additionally, zimelidine was charged to cause an increase in suicidal ideation and/or attempts among depressive patients.

2. Fluoxetine [Brand name Prozac, was introduced shortly after zimelidine was removed from the shelves]

3. Citalopram [Brand names Celexa, Cipramil] In the United States, citalopram, like other antidepressants, carries a black box warning stating that it may increase suicidal thinking and behavior in those under age 24. It is still prescribed to minors.

4. Paroxetine [Brand names Aropax, Paxil, Seroxat) - The most controversial of all SSRi's, classed as a teratogen in the United States but not in the UK

5. Sertraline [Brand names Zoloft, Lustral] In 1999, Zoloft came under great public scrutiny after it was discovered that Eric Harris, one of the two shooters involved in the Columbine High School massacre, had been taking the drug before taking Luvox. Many immediately pointed fingers at zoloft and fluvoxamine.

6. Alaproclate (GEA-654) is a psychoactive drug and research chemical derived from zimelidine (Normud, Zelmid) that was being developed as an antidepressant by the Swedish pharmaceutical company Astra AB (now AstraZeneca) in the 1970s. It acts as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), and along with zimelidine and indalpine, was one of the first of its kind. Development was discontinued due to the observation of liver complications in rodent studies.

7. Fluvoxamine [brand name Luvox] At the end of 1995, more than 10 million patients worldwide had been treated with fluvoxamine.

8. Etoperidone [Discontinued]

9. Escitalopram [Brand names Lexapro, Cipralex, Seroplex, Lexamil, Lexam] According to The New York Times, aggressive pharmaceutical marketing of escitalopram by Forest Laboratories has been controversial: the generic alternatives to the drug are cheaper, but a substantial number of doctors continue to prescribe the more expensive proprietary drug. The United States Senate Special Committee on Aging has released portions of the "Lexapro Fiscal 2004 Marketing Plan" which gives some of the details of the plans to promote use of the drug by doctors.

The EMEA sent me a 57 page list of adverse reactions to the above drugs. Reactions which include; Blood and lymphatic system disorders, Cardiac disorders, Congenital, familial and genetic disorders, Ear and labyrinth disorders, Endocrine disorders, Eye disorders, Gastrointestinal disorders, General disorders and administration site conditions, Hepatobiliary disorders, Immune system disorders, Infections and infestations, Injury, poisoning and procedural complications, Metabolism and nutrition disorders, Musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders, Neoplasms benign, malignant and unspecified (incl cysts and polyps), Nervous system disorders, Pregnancy, puerperium and perinatal conditions, Psychiatric disorders, Renal and urinary disorders, Reproductive system and breast disorders, Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders, Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders, and Vascular disorders.

The 57 page list of adverse drug reactions can be passed on to those of you wishing to view it.

It's further evidence that the regulators are monitoring reactions...but doing very little about the drugs that cause them.

GSK settles Avandia heart attack case before trial

Image: avandialawyercenter.com

Burford case settled on eve of jury trial in Philadelphia

GSK, who have always robustly defended their diabetes drug Avandia, settled a U.S. federal court case alleging its diabetes drug led to the death of a man from a heart attack.

Burford, who died in 2006, was the first to go to trial and could have resulted in a large award against GlaxoSmithKline. Alas, the unknown settlement [with gagging orders] suited both parties.

The settlement also means that Glaxo have quietly settled two other Avandia cases brought in Philadelphia by two plaintiff attorneys, Joseph Zonies and Thomas Cartmell.

In the UK, cases like this go before a judge, no jury is in attendance.

The current UK Seroxat litigation, of which I am a claimant, will be the subject of future posts on this blog. I've remained quiet due to legal reasons but will be going public with revelations shortly. Both ITV and BBC have already approached me.

Watch this space.

HERE WE GO AGAIN - Viibryd, the new SSRi

Image: Business Wire

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to your doctor and not be presented with a new option of antidepressant medication.

On Monday 24 January, it was announced that the the U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA] had approved vilazodone HCl tablets, to be marketed under the brand name Viibryd, for the treatment of adults with major depressive disorder.

According to a press release, Viibryd is a new molecular entity and the first and only selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and 5HT.

Stephen M. Stahl, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego, promotes the use of Viibry with the following:

"When treating MDD, our goal is to offer treatment options that meet the individual needs of each patient..." "Viibryd is an important new treatment option with proven efficacy and a demonstrated safety profile."

Wow a psychiatrist promoting a pill, whatever next?

Clinical Data, which owns worldwide rights to vilazodone from Germany’s Merck KGaA, will offer the drug as a new option for treating patients with major depressive disorder.

They confirmed the safety and effectiveness of vilazodone in two eight-week clinical trials. The drug not only acts as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, not unlike the antidepressant paroxetine [Seroxat/Paxil], but it also is supposed to impact the so-called 5HT1A receptor, a target for the anti-anxiety pill buspirone. Though the combination makes the drug unique, the company says the mechanism of the drug isn’t fully understood. [1]

I just love the last line, "...the company says the mechanism of the drug isn’t fully understood."

No shit Sherlock!

Can we, as consumers, accept that the two eight-week clinical trials were carried out with no manipulation of data? Are we expected to offer ourselves up as guinea pigs when the manufacturer is unsure how the drug works? Surely, if they are unsure how it works, they will be unsure how to treat any adverse reactions that  will more than likely arise out of patients taking it?

Here's an idea. It's free advice to doctors.

When a patient comes in feeling depressed, don't reach for the prescription pad because you only have a 5 minute slot with your patient. Tell them to exercise, it's proven to be more effective than the apparent minimal benefits drugs such as Seroxat can offer.

I suspect Clinical Data would have already briefed their reps regarding the promotion of this rebadged brain zapping drug - just like Glaxo did with their little cash cow.

It amazes me how a medicine regulator can grant licence to a drug that can increase suicidal thoughts in those taking it. I suspect the warnings will be minimal, "dizziness, nausea, diarrhea."

No doubt the patient information leaflet will be laden with the phrase "Talk to your doctor if you suffer this or that"

Pharma market it.

Regulators approve it.

Doctors prescribe it.

Patients endure it.

Great. I sincerely hope coroner's keep their eyes on Viibryd.

Rant over.
