I just saw the following headline on Reuters, "Study reveals new target for antidepressants", and thought, Oh God, who are they targeting now? However, the title is, in the main, about a receptor rather than a human subject.
Journalist Kate Kelland writes:
British scientists using human stem cells say they have found out how antidepressants make new brain cells, a finding that should help drug researchers develop better and more efficient medicines to fight depression.
Here's evidence that antidepressants such as tricyclics and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRi's] can alter the brain... and researchers from King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry [IoP] have published a paper to prove it.
I love the line from Christoph Anacker, a doctorate student at the IoP who led the study:
"Having identified the glucocorticoid receptor as a key player in making new brain cells, we will now be able to use this novel stem cell system to model psychiatric illnesses in the laboratory, test new compounds and develop much more effective, targeted antidepressant drugs,"
Kind of Frankensteinian doncha think?
Just think of all those kids who have been given these drugs, their brains not yet fully formed as they haven't reached adulthood. Don't worry Mr and Mrs Jones, these drugs are safe, your child may suffer dizziness, nausea, diarrhea...oh and their brains will be altered too, we don't know what this chemical change will do to your child but hey, it's an addition to their brain, see it as a computer getting some extra hardware.
I envisage the men in white coats unveiling a square-headed monster with bolts on either side of his head next whilst proclaiming they have found a receptor that makes us eat more and they have a remedy in the shape of a pill that can suppress that particular receptor.
So, for years tricyclics and SSRi's have been altering the structure of your brain.
No shit Sherlock!
And they give this shit to kids!
