GSK's Alleged $1.9 Billion Tax Dodge Went Against Its Own Ethics Code

Two articles of interest recently sent to me from Seroxat advocate, The Truthman

1ST ARTICLE

GSK's Alleged $1.9 Billion Tax Dodge Went Against Its Own Ethics Code

Source: Bnet Pharma

If you thought GlaxoSmithKline was a British company with a British corporate headquarters whose American Depositary Receipts traded on the New York Stock Exchange, you’re wrong! Turns out GSK is a Swiss company, and its U.S. unit is just a device to dodge taxes, according to the WSJ.

The U.S. government has taken GSK to court, demanding $1.9 billion in taxes owed. It alleges that in the merger of Glaxo-Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham, Glaxo became the U.S. unit of a Swiss-based parent. The newly merged U.S. GlaxoSmithKline then paid tax deductible compensation payments to its Swiss parent, thus reducing its tax bill.

The IRS — unsurprisingly — doesn’t quite understand how paying money to yourself makes it non-taxable. This battle comes after GSK lost a 2006 tax war and ended up paying $3.4 billion in unpaid taxes.

Japan Revises SSRI Warnings--Hostility, Violence

Source: Alliance for Human Research Protection

In Japan reports of violence linked to SSRI antidepressants have raised public awareness to the danger these drugs can pose. A Japanese psychiatrist acknowledges: "To say that being able to tell the difference between depressives and mild manic-depressives is the test of a psychiatrist's true skill is no exaggeration."

The absence of any empirically valid diagnostic tool in psychiatry puts patients at risk of trial and error --i.e., Russian roulette--diagnostic and treatment methods

EXPERTS CAST DOUBT ON CLAIM FOR ‘WONDER’ CANCER JABS

It's good to see the mainstream press finally reporting on GSK's vaccine, Cervarix. I've been banging the drum loudly about this for some time now. It appears, the tabloids are now taking an interest - they may wish to delve deeper and look Ofsted's involvement in all of this.

Source: Sunday Express
Hat-Tip: Ruth

LEADING scientists and doctors have raised fresh concerns about the safety of a cervical cancer vaccine.

They have accused the manufacturers of Cervarix and another jab, Gardasil, of making misleading claims.

More than 1,300 British girls have reported adverse reactions to Cervarix, ranging from paralysis to convulsions and sight problems.

Hailed as a wonder drug, it is claimed the jab will give 70 per cent protection from the disease to every girl under 18 by 2011.

Earlier this month the Sunday Express revealed the story of Rebecca Ramagge, 13, of Reigate, Surrey, who has been unable to walk for six months because of a joint disorder.

Rebecca’s paediatrician blames her condition on Cervarix.

In Germany, 13 distinguished professors have complained that the jab makers, Glaxo SmithKline and Sanofi, have been guilty of giving “incorrect” information.

Professor Martina Doren, of the Charitie Hospital in Berlin, said: “What concerns us is that the two manufacturers of the vaccine aren’t always using facts. They claim that a lot of high-risk strains of cancer-causing virus are protected against but equally there are others that are not.

“If protection is not more than 20 per cent then that is an awful lot of money to be spending, particularly as the vaccines have quite serious side-effects.

“Assertions that a vaccine reduces the risk of cervical cancer by 70 per cent or even 98 per cent should not be made at this point.”

Professor Doren criticised the fact that the only trials for the vaccines were carried out on women aged between 15 and 26 while the vaccine was being given to 12 and 13 year olds.

GSK - A Catalogue of Disasters!

Holocaust - an act of mass destruction and loss of life.

Paxil
GSK misrepresented the results of its research to its sales representatives, saying it had "remarkable efficacy and safety in the treatment of adolescent depression".

Zyban
Eighteen smokers have died after taking Zyban - the new 'wonder cure' for nicotine addiction.

Wellbutrin
Wellbutrin was withdrawn in 1986 because of an unacceptable incidence of seizures. It was released back to the market in 1986 for unknown reasons.

Imitrex
Plaintiffs are Ronnie J. Brown, individually, as curator for his wife, Sharon GayDavis Brown, and as natural tutor for their son, Cory H. Brown. Plaintiffs sued for damages to Mrs. Brown caused by her use of the drug Imitrex.

Raxar
In 1999 Raxar was removed from the market after questions regarding its safety were raised. Raxar was shown to prolong the heart's QT interval.

Relenza
The FDA found 115 cases of psychiatric side effects linked to Relenza, including 74 in children. Most of the reports were from Japan.

Lotronex
After meetings with Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Glaxo Wellcome has made the decision to pull Lotronex (alosetron hydrochloride) from the market.

Myodil
Between 1946 and 1988 Glaxo made and sold a spinal x-ray contrast medium called Myodil. Injected into the spinal canal in order to show up problems on x-rays, the drug was sold in approximately fifty countries including the UK. But Myodil, an oil-based yellow dye, was far from harmless itself – once injected into the spine it has been shown to cause a disease called Adhesive Arachnoiditis.

Trivax vaccine
British drug giant GlaxoSmithKline has finally admitted that thousands of babies in this country were inoculated with a batch of toxic whooping cough vaccines in the 1970s. Some experts believe that these Trivax vaccines - which had not passed critical company safety tests - may have caused permanent brain damage and even fatalities in young children.

LYMErix vaccine
Jenny Marra, a New Jersey hospice nurse positive for HLA-DR4, said she had been living with "severe joint and muscle pain since vaccination in 1999. SmithKline did not include a warning about the potential risk for this information in the product labeling or inform the health care providers of this concern. Had I known this I personally would not have taken the vaccine." Physicians aware of the political controversy, she added, are turning the LYMErix vaccine victims away "with statements like, 'I don't want to get involved.'"

Serevent
FDA documents released yesterday indicate that about a year ago, the agency asked Glaxo to strengthen Serevent's existing so-called black box warning, the most serious a drug label can carry. The FDA wanted the label to say that a study found a "a small but significant" risk for asthma-related deaths in all Serevent users and not just African-Americans, as previously indicated.

Advair
Recent medical studies indicate that Advair and it's sister drug Serevent asthma inhaler may be responsible for increased number of asthma deaths in adults & children. The active ingredient salmeterol is also found in Advair, Serevent or Foradil maybe responsible for many of these asthma related deaths. Advair is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline,(GSK). Advair (fluticasone/salmeterol) is an inhaled medication used to treat asthma and COPD. It is a combination medication consisting of an inhaled steroid and a long-acting form of albuterol, called salmeterol.

Avandia
A prominent US clinician has concluded that a diabetes drug produced by UK pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) increases the risks of heart attack and death. Steven Nissen from the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, undertook a meta-analysis of clinical studies comparing patients treated with GSK's Avandia (rosiglitazone maleate) with controls. He concluded that Avandia was associated with a 43 per cent increase in the risk of heart attack. His article, published in the 14 June edition of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), was released early by the journal's editors due to its public health concern.

Cervarix vaccine
A GROUP of British teenagers has launched the first legal action against the makers of a controversial cervical cancer jab. They have suffered symptoms ranging from paralysis and seizures to fatigue and muscle aches since being given the Cervarix vaccine.

What's in a Name - SSRi Brand Naming

I'm currently reading Terence Young's excellent book 'DEATH BY PRESCRIPTION' that he kindly sent me via a Canadian friend of mine. Firstly, thanks for the inscription, very kind :)

Death by Prescription tears at the heart strings during the first few Chapters, Terence talks openly about how he witnessed his daughter, Vanessa, dying in front of him - to cut a long story short, she died as a result of taking a drug, Prepulsid, that was given to her 'off-licence' - a practice that still continues today with a whole heap of drugs.

I'll write about the book when I have completed it.

Terence has made some great analogies throughout thus far and many have been noted.

I feel compelled to write about Chapter 12, 'Games With Names', in which Terence explains how pharmaceutical companies choose brand names as powerful marketing tricks to get you, I and your doctor hooked subconsciously. They hire 'experts' to come up with an 'eye-catching' name [brand].

Some examples Terence points to:

Serafem - Manufactured by Eli Lilly, marketed for women with PMDD [bad periods].

Serafem sounds like seraphim, which means angel. The "phim" is replaced with "fem" - short for feminine. A feminine angel? Sounds nice eh?

Of course, Terence goes into much more detail than I have and came up with more examples and a little test too.

Look at the next two sentences and see if they make sense to you, he writes.

"Can yuo udnrestsnd tihs? Rseaerchres at Cmabrigde Uinervitsy hvee shwne the haumn mnid redas the wrod as a wolhe, so the ordre of the letres is not ipmortant, if the fsrit and lsat leetrts are in the rghit palce."

At first glance you'd think complete gobblydegook, but it's quite simple to read and a trick that Pharma use when giving their drugs a brand name.

Terence points out the rival drug to Viagra, a drug named, 'Levitra'. Using the excercise above it becomes quite clear in the thinking behind the co-manufacturers of Levitra, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, GSK, and Schering-Plough.

See if you can work it out for yourselves.

What does an erectile dysfunction promise to do?

Think about it?

Terence carefully analyses the word Levitra by using the simple excercise.

He writes:

"The human mind reads the whole word, taking meaning from jumbled letters. Levitra is a letter jumble from the word 'elevate' by switching an 'e' for an 'r'. Many male customers would subconsciously get this message without Bayer ever mentioning what they need to elevate."

I've often wondered about the brand names for paroxetine. Seroxat, I thought, seemed pretty clear but maybe the 'ser' does not imply serotonin, maybe it subconsciously implies 'serene'?

Terence also points out that branding companies sometimes use certain letters like 'x' and 'c' because they produce a harder tonality.

It's certainly gave me food for thought.

Take Effexor - Surely the name would imply 'effective'? I bet you any money they wouldn't have named it Deffexor as that would most surely imply the opposite - 'Defective'.

I'm sure there will be many more that you will come across as you go through your medicine cabinets.

Incidently, the Latin for 'peace' is 'Pax' - clever eh?

Terence Young's book, Death By Prescription, is currently on sale and the spirit of his daughter, Vanessa, emanates from each page.

GSK Employee 'Not Happy'

This from the excellent and very insightful, Cafe Pharma Forum, a place where GSK Reps vent their anger.

At GSK, I have participated in fake interviews as part of my development. When I questioned why we are getting people's hopes up (as wall as wasting their time), I was told that I needed the experience in a setting where it couldn't hurt the company and they built up their stock of resumes. Later, when there was a position open, I remembered a great candidate I interviewed and asked for his resume from file. My manager told me "We never look at those resumes again, we just keep them to satisfy HR. If this guy really wants the job, let him reapply. We don't chase after people, they come to us."

Needless to say, after insights like these into management, I am looking for a new company.

Will Seroxat scandal damage GSK?

Source: - Claire Murphy, PR Week

Will Seroxat scandal damage GSK?

by Claire Murphy , PR Week UK 27-Mar-08

GlaxoSmithKline has escaped prosecution over Seroxat, but the public may not be not so forgiving.

When the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) concluded its investigation into GlaxoSmithKline's actions over its Seroxat anti-depressant earlier this month, MHRA chief executive Kent Woods said he was ‘disappointed' that GSK had not released trial data for the drug earlier.

When the data was finally published in 2003, five years after some of the earliest trials had been held, it showed that Seroxat caused an increased risk of suicide in children.

There is no legal requirement to publish trial data once a drug has been licensed, but Woods said he believed GSK had an ‘ethical responsibility' to publish the results.

New research commissioned by PRWeek has found the vast majority of the public agree. Ninety-six per cent of people think GSK should have published the data, while 86 per cent say the reputation of the whole pharma industry has been damaged by the affair.

But the MHRA does not escape blame, with 57.4 per cent of people saying it should be held responsible for failing to ensure Seroxat was correctly prescribed.
The drug was never licensed for children, although some doctors had been prescribing it (until it was banned for under-18s in 2003).

The good news for GSK is that over-55s - likely to be the largest consumers of prescription drugs - are the least likely to lay blame at the door of the company and the most likely to regard the MHRA as responsible. Of this group 66.4 per cent hold GSK responsible (against an average of 71.5 per cent), while 62.9 per cent pin blame on the MHRA.

But GSK's fiercest critics are 45- to 54-year-olds - 75.8 per cent of which hold GSK responsible.

So how should GSK, and the wider pharma industry, re-establish trust?

We asked Shelley Jofre, the BBC journalist whose seven-year investigation of Seroxat led to GSK publishing the trial data, and consultant Karen Winterhalter, the MD of Onyx Health and a member of the British Association for Psychopharmacology.

THE JOURNALIST'S VIEW
Shelley Jofre, reporter, BBC Panorama

‘GSK took an active part in my first two Panorama programmes on Seroxat, before the MHRA banned its use for this age group. GSK's Alastair Benbow was interviewed a third time for a Panorama update after Seroxat was banned for use by under-18s, but his explanation - "If you imagine a school of more than 1,000 children, all of whom are deeply troubled by depression, less than a small class size would have these suicidal thoughts" - seemed ill-judged.

In my later two programmes the company issued statements claiming it had supplied a paediatric trial promptly to the MHRA but - given the MHRA's criticism of GSK - that seems hard to justify.

The issue of relevance to the PR community is the use of medical writers to prepare trial data reports. In one GSK trial the data showed ten children (of the sample of 93) had severe psychiatric problems that were "possibly related" to taking Seroxat and one had a headache that was "definitely related". In the report the writer had changed the meaning by writing: "Of the 11 patients, only a headache was considered to be related to the treatment."'

THE PR PROFESSIONAL'S VIEW
Karen Winterhalter, managing director, Onyx Health

‘The majority of people do not really understand the pharmaceutical industry and this leads to suspicion. The negative stories are never balanced with good ones about the investment pharma firms put into research, the development of corporate social responsibility programmes encouraging more science in schools, or the fact that the industry employs about 323,000 people directly and indirectly in the UK.

The two biggest hurdles the industry faces are the general lack of understanding of how a drug gets its licence and how certain sections of the media report drug-related stories.

While many condemn GSK for not disclosing problems with Seroxat earlier, I wonder how many realise the drug was never licensed for children in this country, a message the media largely failed to report.

As well as getting positive facts out about the industry, we need a basic education programme about how drugs are licensed and funded in the UK. We can expect a dip in the industry's reputation but, as history has shown, it will be temporary.'

Flu Vaccinated Kids More Likely to Be Hospitalized

On May 19, 2009, researchers presented a study that found children who received the trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine [TIV] had a three times greater risk of hospitalization for the flu than kids who were not vaccinated at the International Conference of the American Thoracic Society in San Diego.

To determine whether the vaccine was effective in reducing the number of hospitalizations over consecutive flu seasons for 8 years, the researchers conducted a study of 263 children between the ages of 6 months and 18, evaluated at the Mayo Clinic between 1996 and 2006, with laboratory-confirmed influenza and reviewed records to determine which kids had received a flu shot before the illness and hospitalization.

The CDC currently recommends that “all children aged 6 months up to their 19th birthday get a flu vaccine,” on its website.

The Money behind Falsified Drug Research

Source OpEd News

Last week we reported that a Dr. Karen Wagner, professor, psychiatrist and key researcher at the University of Texas was one of the latest targets caught in the net of U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley in his ongoing war against drug company corruption and undue financial influence on the U.S. Health industry.

Grassley's investigators initially found that pharmaceutical giant, GlaxoSmithKline paid the psychiatrist more than $160,000 between 2000 and 2005 while she was the director of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

SHARISE GATCHELL R.I.P.

On the 25th May, 2003, Sharise Gatchell committed suicide. Her parents found her on their return from a weekend trip in Scotland.

This from the memorial site her sister set up for her.

----

This web site is dedicated to my late sister Sharise Gatchell.

Sharise committed suicide on the 25th May 2003...age 18... Sharise had been prescribed the anti-depressant Seroxat, also known as Paxil in the U.S.

I really thought she would become a famous artist.. Sharise had so much talent and energy, Seroxat took that all that away... after only 17 days on Seroxat, she hanged herself from the loft hatch in my parents home...

My mom and dad found her on their return from a weekend trip in Scotland... Sharise knew very well that my parents would not let her go back on Seroxat and so she took it secretly. The first time she was prescribed the drug at the age of 16, she started self harming, cutting her arms, something that had never ever happened before. She was never the same again.

2 years later Sharise felt really down and in desperation went to see a GP. Unwittingly a new doctor prescribed my sister Seroxat again. The previous doctor never bothered to add to the medical records that Seroxat had caused Sharise to self harm, even after my mother made a great deal of effort to make her aware of the issue.

The drugs manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline has finally admitted that Seroxat can cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies when on the drug.. Thanks for letting us know 2 weeks after her death. Congratulations for raking in billions of pounds while you poison our society with your wicked "treatments" that are now turning out to be less beneficial than a placebo. I wish immense stress and bankruptcy on all of you.

My family and I will spend the rest of our days making people aware of the enormity of your greed, and your selfish disregard for human life... we shall NEVER stop...

As a mark of respect, Seroxat Sufferers Blog will carry no futher posts today.

I think even they know how influential blogging can be!

Thanks to The Truthman for these links:

1st one - Ed Silverman formerly of the excellent Pharmalot, writes about the new GSK Blog.

"Big pharma continues to dabble, tentatively, with social media. The latest example is GlaxoSmithKline, which this week launched its very own corporate blog, called More Than Medicine. The effort, which is edited by a corporate communications person identified only as Michael M, will purportedly devote more space to health issues but largely avoid discussion of Glaxo products, citing “unique regulatory parameters governing our communications” as a drug maker."

2nd one - John Mack talks aboyt the 'real agenda' of GSK's new blog.

"Why did GSK launch this blog and why is it focused only on US residents? I hope to get answers to these and other questions from "Michael F.," one of the GSK bloggers, in a future Pharma Marketing Talk show/podcast interview. That won't stop me, however, from speculating."

GlaxoSmithKline in $1.9 billion tax court battle

Source Wall Street Journal

GlaxoSmithKline PLC is embroiled in a potential $1.9 billion court battle with the Internal Revenue Service, which says the drug maker owes back taxes, interest and penalties stemming from tax deductions Glaxo generated essentially by making payments to itself.

The dispute centers on a practice known as earnings stripping, in which a multinational company reduces its taxes by claiming interest deductions for payments to a related unit overseas. The company claims deductions on its U.S. tax return, but no money ultimately leaves the parent company's coffers, and publicly reported profit is unchanged.

"The ability of U.S. subsidiaries of foreign multinationals to strip away earnings like this is a problem" because it significantly reduces the U.S. corporate-tax base, says Reuven Avi-Yonah, a former corporate tax attorney and now director of the international-tax program at the University of Michigan Law School.

The battle comes as the Obama administration is targeting corporate tax cutting, this month unveiling a list of tactics it wants to curtail. One of the proposals addresses earnings stripping, but only for a narrow segment of companies.

MPs call in a psychiatrist to deal with the 'stress' of the expenses furore

Source: Daily Mail

A psychiatrist has been made available to counsel cheating MPs who are 'stressed' by the expenses scandal.

The therapist has been retained on-call because of concerns that some politicians are close to mental breakdowns following scrutiny of their claims, the Mail understands.

At least half a dozen MPs have been reported to the police following allegations that they have committed crimes by fiddling their taxpayer-funded allowances.

The Mail reported this month that three unnamed backbenchers were said to have been placed on 'suicide watch' by Labour whips.

The psychiatrist, paid from taxpayers' money, will be on hand to counsel MPs struggling to cope after details of their excesses were revealed, sources say

MD Calls for immediate embargo of all antipsychotics and antidepressants

Newswire

Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD Announces: Vets' Sudden Cardiac Deaths Are Not Suicides or Overdoses

EL CAJON, Calif., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD today announced the results of his research into the "series" of veterans' deaths acknowledged by the Surgeon General of the Army.

Upon reading the May 24, 2008, Charleston (WV) Gazette article "Vets taking Post Traumatic Stress Disorder drugs die in sleep," Baughman began to investigate why these reported deaths were "different." And, why they were likely, the "tip of an iceberg."

Andrew White, Eric Layne, Nicholas Endicott and Derek Johnson were four West Virginia veterans who died in their sleep in early 2008. Baughman's research suggests that they did not commit suicide and did not overdose as suggested by the military. All were diagnosed with PTSD. All seemed "normal" when they went to bed. And, all were on Klonopin (a benzodiazepine), Paxil (an SSRI antidepressant) and Seroquel (an antipsychotic).

On January 15, 2009, the New England Journal of Medicine (Ray et al), reported that antipsychotics double the risk of sudden cardiac death.

On February 7, 2008, Surgeon General Eric B. Schoomaker, said there has been "a series of deaths in Warrior Training Units" -- "often as a consequence of the use of multiple prescription and nonprescription medicines and alcohol ... we all saw the unfortunate death of Heath Ledger, the 'Brokeback Mountain' star, who died from an accidental overdose."

But Ledger was not on any heart-toxic medication. When found, his pulse and respirations were intact! When found, none of the veterans were breathing or had pulse. There's, most likely, were sudden cardiac deaths!

Sudden cardiac death is an unexpected death due to cardiac causes occurring in a short time period (generally within 1 h of symptom onset) in a person with known or unknown cardiac disease in whom no previously diagnosed fatal condition is apparent. (Medscape e-Medicine 7/17/06)

As of April 16, 2009, veteran's wife, Diane Vande Burgt, had Googled 19 "dead in bed," 36 "dead in barracks," or "... room," and 19 "under investigation." Removing reported "suicides" shortened our original list by 15 names leaving a total of 74 probable sudden cardiac deaths - most in soldiers or veterans in their 20's. An article from the AP, San Antonio, 4/17/09, reported "The deaths of two soldiers are being investigated ... both men apparently died in their sleep."

It was reported in June, 2008, that 89% of veterans with PTSD are given antidepressants and 34% antipsychotics (Mohamed & Rosenheck, June 2008). A third, then, are exposed to the additive potential of both to cause sudden cardiac death. (Sicouri & Antzelevitch, 2008)

On April 13, 2009, Baughman wrote the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army: "the Surgeon General said there has been 'a series, a sequence of deaths' Has the study of these deaths been published?

On April 17, 2009, the response came: "The assessment is still pending and has not been released yet."

There being no such thing as an essential psychiatric drug, I call upon the military for an immediate embargo of all antipsychotics and antidepressants until there has been a complete, wholly public, clarification of the extent and causes of this epidemic of probable sudden cardiac deaths.

15TH MAY - MEETING WITH MHRA - BIRMINGHAM

At 11am today I met with Simon Gregor, the Communications Manager at the MHRA.

Simon had contacted me some two weeks previous to invite me to share my thoughts about the fairly recent MHRA Strategy Plan, which can be downloaded HERE.

We spoke at great length [almost two and a half hours] and, it seems, the MHRA are opening their doors to patient/advocate feedback.

The MHRA's vision is set out as:

Identify areas of work where the Agency can build and strengthen co-operative and mutually beneficial relationships with patients and the public.

Encourage and promote patient and public engagement in Agency activities, where appropriate, ensuring that the partnership is meaningful and effective.

Ensure that plans and decisions made within the Agency have been considered and influenced by patients and the public where relevant in their development.

Engage a diverse range of individuals within the Agency's work so that views reflected come from a wide constituency of people.

Ensure that the engagement of patients and public is championed and promoted at a senior level within the Agency.

Engage and consult with Agency staff and other stakeholders in the development of patient and public engagement within the Agency.

We discussed many issues and, dare I say, broke down some barriers. The angle, from what I can gather, is the MHRA have realised that patient and advocate input is vitally important to their business and vitally important to needless patient suffering.

Some may see this as a way of stifling those critics [such as myself] but I guess there has to be a point where 'enemies' sit down at a table and talk.

Simon has plans to speak with other advocates and patients and asked me to offer up names of those whom I thought could prove a valuable asset to MHRA coming to grips with exactly how we feel about them.

There are folk, two in particular that I would have liked to included on the list but they choose to write anonymous blogs, therefore I kept their anonymity, I speak of two good friends and advocates who write Seroxat Secrets and GSK Licence to Kill. If the authors of these sites wish to speak with Simon Gregor, they can contact me at my email address.

I think this is a massive opportunity for those of us who have criticised the MHRA for what we see as failings - Personally, I think Simon Gregor wants these opinions so the MHRA can move forwards rather than be stuck in this almost masonic situation they are currently in. If you read the strategy plan you will note that the previous meetings with campaigners have been beneficial to them. My argument with Simon was whether they were beneficial to the advocates.

As you know, my last meeting with Kent Woods seemed to go well. A meeting with David Healy was promised. 7 months went by and no such meeting had been arranged. It has now. David Healy is due to talk with the MHRA in late June. A new protocol for tapering will be put on the table.

The MHRA acknowledge there is an SSRi problem. These series of discussions with advocates will help them understand exactly how bigger problem they really have.

This IS NOT about Seroxat and to be honest I'm sick to the back teeth of stating this. This is about ALL SSRi's.

To this end I have given Simon names of advocates whom I think have something useful to say. This is their chance to sit down at the table and air their views.

Simon has agreed to meet with these individuals and also added BBC TV's, Shelley Jofre, to the list.

I put forward the following to Simon.

Charles Medawar [Social Audit]
Janice Simmons [Seroxat User Group]
Stuart Jones [Patient Advocate]
Stephany Gatchell [Patient Advocate]
Janne Larsson [Investigative Writer]
Matthew Holford [ It's Quite An Experience Blog]

Last, but not least, I put forward the name of someone who has in the past, and still today, accuses me of having only one issue as my concern [Seroxat] I am referring to Mardi Bennett who uses the nickname Tuesday1st, I wrote about her last week HERE. She bangs the drum on forums and recently created a blog. She is also a good friend of my cyber stalker, Jeremy Bryce. I would have put forward his name but he seems too busy impersonating other people, including me and if he is happy doing that rather than working toward a solution then I shall leave him to it.

I have emailed all those on the list. Simon is prepared to meet with them all, he is just waiting for them to respond either to me or him personally.

So, there you have it.

Banging the drum is making a difference folks. By their own admission, the MHRA are well aware of the power of blogging and now see the importance of involving patients and advocates.

We can sit back and criticize from the comfort of our homes or we can tell them face to face where we think they are going wrong.

Opportunity knocks.

I hope all those names I put forward today, grasp this opportunity.

Things are changing folks, at least they are this side of the pond

I'll be meeting with Simon three to four times a year from this point in.

It's a huge leap from 3 years ago when I started writing. It shows that collectively we can all make changes and get our voices heard and personally, I see it as two fingers up to Pharma. They may be able to silence litigants with 'gagging orders' but they will never silence patients/advocates who have issues regarding the way their drugs seriously affect people who take them.

MEETING TOMORROW WITH MHRA

Tomorrow I'm meeting with the MHRA in Birmingham. An offer to meet was made by their communications department and several emails and phone calls later, a meeting between myself an the Communications Manager was secured.

This, it seems, is part of the recent initiative by the MHRA to talk to patients/advocates. I know I am one of perhaps many patients/advocates that the MHRA will want to meet with. They know I criticize and they also know I'm in this til the bitter end.

There are changes I would like to see within the department and I shall air those views tomorrow.

This meeting is not about Seroxat or SSRi's but I'm sure this issue will be raised.

I will let you know how the meeting goes at a later date.
